Gym attire

So at the grand old age of 40, I finally have to set foot in a gym. Recently had knee issues which mean physio. I was told to wear shorts so my knee is visible to the physio. So I bought the longest proper pair of shorts these I could find and off I went. All good. Except now I've been graduated to having to use gym equipment 😱

It feels positively indecent lying on the leg press machine. And takes several adjustments so my skin doesn't touch the saddle on the bike.

Everyone else (female) is wearing over the knee leggings or trousers, which I can't. What am I doing wrong and what should I be wearing?

Why can’t you wear over the knee leggings and just roll that leg back so that your knee shows when you need it to?

PurpleDaisies · 02/10/2019 21:01

You could wear fitted shorts with a long t shirt? Or a short baggy pair of shorts over the top?

justrestinginmybankaccount · 02/10/2019 21:01

Ahhh! Well done getting going at the gym! Is every session a PT session - I mean do you have to have your knee visible always?

I’m thinking bicycle shorts? The tight stuff is soo much easier to wear - it stays in place and doesn’t offer any “grand reveals” 😆

Definitely long cycling shorts. Or even normal short ones under your loosey ones.

Nice on on graduating to the gym! Hope it goes well for you.

Yes!

My body was not designed to wear leggings...

Or try men's wear , often longer shorts

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 02/10/2019 21:07

Cycle shorts? Or if you want something not so form fitting, cycle shorts and then your shorts over the top.

HarissaPaste · 02/10/2019 21:08

What about yoga capris?

dementedpixie · 02/10/2019 21:09

Double layer shorts? Cycling shorts?

user1471548941 · 02/10/2019 21:10

Look at sites that sell proper runners gear. I have a pair of shorts that look like cycling shorts, navy blue, down to the knee, completely fitted but also a much more robust material than leggings that provides a smooth shape without showing off my wobbly bits. Think they are New Balance.

I wear them to stop chaffing whilst running but they would suit your requirements too. Also some running shorts have fitted cycling type shorts under a baggy overshort- would also solve your problem.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 02/10/2019 21:10

Dd wears shorts like these m.jdsports.co.uk/product/black-adidas-performance-adapt-to-chaos-shorts/1309932/
They have two layers so a tight fitted pair of shorts under and the looser outer layer

GymNovice · 02/10/2019 21:21

The tight stuff is soo much easier to wear Believe me, no one wants to see me in tight stuff 😂

Dear god, 4 inch shorts Shock the mind boggles! It's all skin tight or ridiculously short.

I have some short leggings I wear under dresses, that might work under the shorts?
I have difficulty finding t-shirts which are long enough to meet my trousers. I doubt I'd find any long enough to cover my arse.

I wear men’s running shorts for physio. They often have a sort of mesh thing inside that almost acts as a modesty panel type thing Grin. In your situation I would wear cycling shorts or at least some kind of short style pants that you could wear under the shorts. You have my sympathy. I absolutely hate having to wear the shorts for my physio sessions as would usually wear leggings even in summer.

TooStressyTooMessy · 02/10/2019 21:25

Ooh that pair that Unicorn linked to look great!

Holidaycountdown · 03/10/2019 00:24

Here’s a more budget friendly version. We have to wear shorts a lot for the sports therapy course I’m on which involves a lot of moving each other around in odd positions on the couch so this type of short is perfect for avoiding flashing anyone without feeling like you’re trussed up in Lycra for all to see!

Agree with everyone you need lycra shorts then, if that makes you feel self concious, you can wear your baggy shorts over the top.
Lots of female rugby players wear them like that (lot cheaper than the fancy double layered ones)

GymNovice · 03/10/2019 07:29

Ok, so will I get laughed out the room if I go like this?

I wouldn't laugh. You get shirts that are designed like that

dementedpixie · 03/10/2019 07:32

*,shorts

Ludways · 03/10/2019 07:54

Certainly wouldn't laugh, I see people like that at my gym.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 03/10/2019 08:33

Nope, that's what I cycle in. Undershorts to protect, overshorts to conceal.

Bloodycats · 03/10/2019 09:05

No one will laugh at you op. People wear stuff like that all the time.

BikeRunSki · 03/10/2019 09:05

Not at all. The problem I find withdhirts like that, is that they chafe around the h. I much prefer knee length leggings (and I am not slim) where the hem is on a part of my leg that dies not rub on the saddle/seat ms of the exercise machines.

Damntheman · 03/10/2019 09:25

Definitely cycle shorts under the ones you've got already! Nobody will laugh, don't worry, a lot of gym wear looks like that these days.

Stravapalava · 03/10/2019 09:32

I wear these to run in www.sportsdirect.com/karrimor-short-tights-ladies-457149#colcode=45714903

They come to about mid thigh, so shouldn't be a problem for you.
