If you work in a school....

What do you wear to work?

I've applied for a job and am getting merrily ahead of myself by planning some shopping 😂 I currently wear jeans and hoodies to work but that may not fly if I get this job!

A shirt, a cardigan both tucked under a knee length skirt would be appropriate

LemonPrism · 02/10/2019 18:34

I'm sure trousers, shirt and jumper would be fine

RedElephants · 02/10/2019 18:39

LSM/TA here.
I wear trousers, smart jeggings & smart black or very dark navy jeans occasionally,
Nice or should that be Naice T-shirts, tops and shirt/blouses.
Cardigan or jumper on top of that.
Loafertype shoes or ankle boots on my feet..

TA here. generally black jeans, t shirt or shirt . Comfortable boots. Clothes that I don't mind getting paint/glue/sick/wee etc on!!!

noblegiraffe · 02/10/2019 18:47

What kind of job and secondary or primary?

AllGoodDogs · 02/10/2019 18:48

Thank you! Shoes will have to be on my shopping list, I live in flip-flops, trainers or (fake) uggs! Sainsburys had some nice suede ankle boots in last week. Thinking thick tights and a skirt with a naice jumper for interview if I get one!

Leggings, tunics or jumper dresses and ballet flats for rushing around all day and modest for having to crouch down to child level often.

30somethingandtired · 02/10/2019 18:59

Trousers and smart top for me.

Our schools only stipulations for staff are no sportswear (except PE teachers) and no denim.

Otherwise just go for something fairly modest - think about necklines and skirt / dress lengths - you might look fine stood up but will probably be bending or leaning over a lot during the day.

Go for flat, comfortable footwear.

Opt for layers (cardigans etc) as school heating systems can be all over the place, roasting hot one day, freezing the next.

Make sure you have a decent (smart-ish) waterproof coat for outdoor duties.

Good luck!

Basilandparsleyandmint · 02/10/2019 19:01

What job is it that you have applied for in the school?

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 02/10/2019 19:04

Our rules:
No low cut tops
No denim
No cold shoulder tops
No short skirts
No flip flops

I usually wear leggings (when I’m feeling frumpy) or black jeans with a smart top/jumper and boots in the colder weather.

In the summer, I wear harem pants and a high cut vest top - no strappy sleeves - and sandals or slip on shoes.

CalamityJune · 02/10/2019 19:06

I usually wear midi or maxi dresses with boots, or trousers and a blouse or smart jumper.

TeenPlusTwenties · 02/10/2019 19:07

OP. it makes a difference if you are teacher or TA or office or caretaker.

locketsprocket · 02/10/2019 19:08

I'm a SENS T/A I often wear jeans, leggings converse etc mostly because it practical especially when I'm crawling on the floor doing physio

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 02/10/2019 19:11

Dress code at my school is no denim, no visible tattoos, no slogans, no piercings other than one in each earlobe, covered shoulders, no backless shoes. Underwear must be worn but not seen (after a TA wore thin white tight trousers with no underwear!). I’m office based so wear smarter clothes than the EYFS classroom staff as I’m not at huge risk from glue or paint.... I wore a suit for my interview and tend to wear dresses or skirts and blouses day to day.

Springcleanish · 02/10/2019 19:12

Check the school staff dress code and one step smarter for interview. My last post, secondary, is very traditional, teachers must be wearing a jacket, collared shirt/ blouse, no facial studs or tattoos visible.

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 02/10/2019 19:15

Sometimes a dress, more often than not jeans and top. On teacher training days it’s leggings and a hoodie.

Im always presentable, clean and tidy.

TryingAndFailing39 · 02/10/2019 19:20

Knee length smart shift dress, heels and a jacket or smart cardigan. I have SO many dresses for work! (Many are charity shop bargains!)

IamHyouweegobshite · 02/10/2019 19:23

I'm a Ta, today I wore a dress with leggings and loafers, with a long card, really chilly today. Think about shoes, these are very important, no good tottering around if you're running after little ones. Also make sure any tops are not gapey if you bend over - not great for higher years.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 02/10/2019 19:26

Secondary science

Uniqlo ankle grazer trousers (can get them for less than £8) in sale, they look smart but have an elasticated waist so are super comfy and no chance of showing anything when you bend over.

Hamble Oaks from Clarks, mine always need reheeling after a few weeks but then last for years.

Tops normally a shirt or top from Uniqlo with a cardigan or Jersey blazer and a nude vest underneath for wRmth and to protect from gaping shirts.

I try not to spend too much as I'm clumsy and inevitably end up with, board pen, glue or chemical stains on my clothes.

rosegoldwatcher · 02/10/2019 19:28

Most schools will not countenance jeans of any colour, strappy tops or flip-flops. Many schools insist on jackets in corridors!

MrsLJ2014 · 02/10/2019 20:50

Usually I wear a dress, carry, tights and flats, sometimes a skirt and carry and many days where I wear pyjamas / little red riding hood costume / spotty socks / something green...gotta love a dress up day!! Which seem to happen a lot! Primary

MrsLJ2014 · 02/10/2019 20:51

Carry = cardy!

Apple23 · 02/10/2019 21:00

Make sure it's not possible to see up it, down it or through it. Layers all the way.

Most schools will have a dress code along the lines already mentioned (I would add no clothes with slogans as also commonly stipulated), but some will be more formal than others.

If you get called for interview, take note of what the staff you meet are wearing and if you get the post dress up rather than down on your first day. Don't wear anything that you would be distraught to have ruined.
