Car insurance not providing a renewal price PLEASE HELP

My car insurance have been unable to provide a renewal price. Does this mean I've been refused insurance? They can't or won't give me a reason why and this will follow me around forever now as I'll always have to declair that I've been refused surely. Apparently there is no way of checking to see if this is a mistake.

Any ideas on how to get them to tell me why?

Will they let you take a new policy rather than a renewal or will they just not insure you?
Do you have an old car?
Have you had any accidents or convictions?

Fairylea · 02/10/2019 07:31

Surely it won’t affect anything...? Just go on compare the market and search for a new quote!

Aanotherusername · 02/10/2019 07:37

Car is nearly 3 years, I have not accidents/convictions but my husband does but had them last year renewal.

It effects new quotes because of the question have you ever been refuse car insurance.

Did wonder about ringing them when they open to see if the can take husband off and offer me a renewal price then. But it was a closed book yesterday with them. Just we have your details and we can offer you a price and we haven't been told why.

You haven't been refused insurance. Sometimes they change the policies. I was with a company and the following year my car was too old for their policies. You won't have to declare it to anyone.

AmIThough · 02/10/2019 07:42

Did you not get an email/letter around the time you'd usually get a renewal quote?

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 02/10/2019 07:43

If you start a comparison site search there are usually screening questions. From memory, yes/no questions like have you ever had a criminal conviction? are you a U.K. resident? been banned from driving? Etc

Is there anything in that list that stands out to you?

KnifeAngel · 02/10/2019 07:43

I forgot to say. It's usually best to change yearly any way as you get a better price shopping around.

Something like this happened to me, I’d arranged it online but the company it was with no longer did car insurance so I got no quote...it isn’t the same as having motor insurance refused, I got insurance somewhere else no problem

Aanotherusername · 02/10/2019 07:54

my husband has 2 accidents in the last 5 year and a driving conviction, all which happened before last years renewal. I've got nothing at all.

The comparison question is very woolly something like have you ever been refused insurance, cancelled or special conditions applied. But sometimes includes refusal to renew.

I asked the insurance if this constituted refusal to insure and they said I'd have to answer yes.

Can you make a data protection subject access request?

dimsum123 · 02/10/2019 08:00

Try an insurance broker rather than online, they may have more insight into what is going on which does seem rather strange going by what you've said.

Aanotherusername · 02/10/2019 08:00

Ooh that's an idea. It just seems very unfair if this a business decision based on risk that I get lumped in with people who have lied and made fraudulent claims and had insurance cancelled.

@dimsum123 I tried yesterday a company of brokers that specialise in rufused in the passed and they can do anything unless I can give them a reason.

This happened to me when we moved house, despite moving only moving a few doors down! I rung to change my address and they said they could no longer insure me and wouldn't tell me why either. Never claimed, no points or convictions etc. I was in a panic too! Honestly though just ignore it. Get yourself on a price comparison site, get a new quote and move on. Don't worry about the 'have you ever been refused insurance' question - load of crap!

coconuttelegraph · 02/10/2019 08:10

I assume you've done all the comparison sites answering no to the have you been refused question, did all the other companies come back with reasonable quotes? If so it suggests that something with your insurer has changed rather than with you although your Dh does sound like a bad risk, can you leave him off the quotes?

Aanotherusername · 02/10/2019 08:38

Right spoke to insurer again asked them to take husband off but it didn't make a difference. They also said it's not a refusal to insure, probably nothing to do with us rather my postcode/car type has in all likelihood become high risk over the last year. So off to get some reasonable quotes now!

This happened to me when I moved from a smaller city to Manchester despite my new house being in a much nicer area! I guess such areas attract a lot more car crime and my insurance was cancelled partway through the year.

YobaOljazUwaque · 02/10/2019 19:10

I don't think this is the same as having insurance refused. It's just the policy you have isn't being done by that provider any more so can't be renewed. It's not the same thing.

Reallywhataday · 02/10/2019 20:05

This happened to my partner and it was because the under writer they used changed. So last year the under writer would insure him and this year the new one wouldn't. Not a refusal of insurance so he didn't need to declare anything.
