Would a TV unit with doors annoy you?

Trying to find a TV unit that’s about 75cm high, so the height of a sideboard. All TV units I can see are too low. If I got a sideboard and had to open the door every time or leave it open to operate the sky box, would that do my head in? I’m guessing the remote signal won’t work through a door. Unless there’s something that can transmit it for me?

If the doors are glass the signal should work through them. It does at my parents' house. Opening the door all the time will drive you nuts.

Sooooo annoying

I’ve been searching for a tall cupboard for the tv. Tv ones are too low for me. Came across a grey sideboard with wicker doors in Dunelm. Tempted as I think the remote would work through the wicker?

What about a console table? How deep does it need to be?

I don't know how sky box works but I have a roku device that's like a USB plugged into back of tv and I can control it from my phone anywhere in the house..do sky do anything like that? Wouldn't need to worry about cupboard then.

We got a unit with doors but found that the things in it like Xbox TiVo etc would overheat Sad so in the end we just took the doors off and now unless you knew it had doors to begin with it just looks like an open unit with shelves.

Ginkypig · 02/10/2019 00:59

I should say that we did try using it with the 1 door open while in use but it got really annoying having to keep it open and leave it open long enough to let things cool down and it didn't stop the overheating so I just thought bugger it one day and took them off.

Gumtree and FB marketplace, if you can bear haggling in a souk- are full of TV units!many are free!

Thanks all, I did wonder about buying a unit and not putting a door on/leaving the drawer out.
Good point about the over heating.

Ideally I want it to be about 1.5m wide.

Think will have to be a dresser/sideboard/console table with the door removed.

I have bought a TV unit which is lovely but too low and I have replaced the legs with longer hairpin legs

VaguelySensible · 02/10/2019 16:53

But how deep? Console tables are usually about 30cm deep, whereas a sideboard would be 40-60cm deep. 30cm is plenty to accommodate the TV, but what about the various boxes/DVD player/consoles etc that you might want under the TV?

I'm actually quite taken by some of the console tables, the ones with a couple of drawers (for remotes, gadgetry and manuals), and a shelf or two for the DVD etc. Might go for one next time. Of course, what a console table lacks is a closed back to hide all the cables.

I had the same problem but came across the IKEA Besta TV bench. It's about 75cm tall and there are different configurations to choose from.
