Dd has new DMs but gets a blister after every wear
Any tips on getting them softer on the heel.

I haven't worn them for about 20 years and this is one of the reasons. The point at which they stop making a hole in your heel is when the leather is so worn down they have holes in their own heels and then you need a new pair and it starts all over again.

I've found Compeed are good with more troublesome recent shoes that aren't DMs but what I used to do back then is cut a sponge in half and tape it onto my heel with parcel tape.

2 pairs of socks to stretch them out a bit. Plaster on heel for the meantime. My first pair I wore in every day with tights then knee high stripey socks scrunched down over them, but it was 1986...

mamalovebird · 01/10/2019 22:57

Someone once told me to put them on the radiator to soften up the leather!

HeinzBlondeHate · 01/10/2019 23:00

Following as I've recently treated myself to a pair but as of yet haven't worn them because they feel like they will cut my heel to shreds !
I really need to get wearing them to break them in but I have to walk a lot of miles in a day the worry of doing that with painful feet is putting me off !

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 01/10/2019 23:02

A couple of plasters where they rub and very thick/two pairs of socks.

They're so comfy when broken in they're worth the initial pain!

BringOnTheScience · 01/10/2019 23:03

Thick socks & compeed.

Of just go for my DC1's first approach, which was to just wear the bastards for a 3 day weekend away and never let on that there was an issue until I did the washing and found the socks caked in blood!!

TheNestedIf · 01/10/2019 23:08

Only trouble with the extra socks is that you wish you had had the hindsight to have ordered the next size in shoes up.

Did this with a recent pair of trainers that were rubbing which resulted in 3 of my toenails going black and falling off. Hmm

Vaseline - on the inside of the shoe( heel part) plus preventative plasters or the preventative blister plasters if you’re feeling flush and thick socks.

My final suggestion is what the 15 year old me did back in the day - sleep in them whilst wearing your thickest school socks. I slept in them for a few nights ( until my mum found out and went crackers) but it really did help!

I think I’d read somewhere it was what celebs did???!!!

TheNestedIf · 01/10/2019 23:09

Foresight, not hindsight.

Orchidflower1 · 01/10/2019 23:11

Actually do you know what I wish I’d kept my doccers - they were soooo comfy..,.,. In the end! 30 year old ones would be even better!

Doyoumind · 01/10/2019 23:15

Similar to the radiator suggestion, using a hair dryer softens the leather.

Superzowie · 01/10/2019 23:51

No idea! I have several pairs currently and have been wearing DMs for the past 30 years. I've never had a single blister!

ToLiveInPeace · 02/10/2019 07:15

Current DMs are narrower and less comfortable than the ones I bought 15 or (cough) 25 years ago. I think I need to invest in their vintage style pairs :/

SuperPixie247 · 02/10/2019 07:18

Take out the insole in the bottom of the shoe and then wear thick bedsocks.

Yellredder · 02/10/2019 07:23

Am surprised they need breaking in! Have bought a couple of pairs in the last two years and I've not had to break them in at all as the leather is so much softer than they used to be - and certainly softer than my work ones which are about 25 years old!

Fairylea · 02/10/2019 07:30

Two pairs of socks and compeed blister plasters.

And yes the newer ones are much harder than they used to be in the 1990s...! I ended up giving up and selling my new ones. Saying that though they do a type called Pascal now which have super soft leather - I’m tempted to try these!

Hairdryer on the shoes inside and out before putting them on and then when you first put them on works wonders
