How did you feel after having a copper coil inserted?

I had a copper coil put in last tuesday. All fine until wednesday afternoon when I got horrendous stomach cramps and could barely move. These eased off by friday afternoon. Bit of spotting to start with but I'm now bleeding heavily. I'm on my 3rd day of heavy bleeding and its heavier than the last two days. I dont think excessive but it's much heavier than I normally get when I have a period. Does this sound normal?

I bled heavily initially - painful too. Had very heavy periods for about 12 months which then settled down somewhat. I’ve kept it in because I prefer a non hormonal contraceptive but honestly there are times when I just want to rip it out!
I think go back to your doctor to check it’s properly in place.

I had to have the copper coil removed after 6 months due to REALLY heavy bleeding. So heavy it made me anaemic.

ClaudiaSchiffersUglySister · 01/10/2019 20:14

I had one in for a year. Light bleeding most of the time plus heavy periods. I always had heavy periods anyway.

Insertion was horrible, worst cramps all day.

My mum bled really heavily with hers. Two weeks on, two weeks off, I seem to remember.

Now on my second Mirena. They’re much better. Don’t bleed at all now.

How old are you (anywhere near menopausal?)? Is there a particular reason you picked the copper instead of Mirena?

I now know it’s best for me to have it inserted during a period as the cervix is slightly more open, and to take fuckloads of pain relief and possibly even a Valium. God knows what I was thinking the first time round!

I found it absolutely agonising. Screaming on the floor rolling around agony. Worst pain ever and I've had an epidural wear off mid c-section.

My periods were horribly heavy and painful - white knuckle, sweating, trembling painful - and I ended up on transexemic acid and metafamic (sp) acid. Had it taken out after 10 months and felt instantly better. My periods feel like a walk in the park now!

I was ok straight after but about 2 weeks after that had a bleed so heavy that I didn’t notice that the coil was expelled (at least we are assuming, I’ve not had an X-ray to check if it’s migrated) but it’s gone and I had no idea until I fell pregnant on the next cycle. I was never offered a 6 week check, had no idea that was a thing so I would definitely recommend getting it checked. It does cause heavier periods.

I bled heavily and was sent back to the hospital to check for anemia. Best get advice from who fitted it. Mine took 9 months to settle.

I've had the copper coil in for about 17 years now (since I was 28). I had a break when i wanted a baby, but other than that (and the 4-5 year changes) it has always been in. Hate getting them fitted, and did get spotting and cramps but they subsided within a day. I'd get it double checked to make sure it hasn't dislodged.

HarryPotterFan436 · 01/10/2019 20:39

I'm 33. I picked the copper coil as I wanted non hormonal contraception. Hormones really dont agree very well with me. My periods are usually quite light so my hope was that they'd be manageable if it makes them heavier. I was only warned about spotting after fitting and this is most definitely not spotting. I would suspect I have bled more today than I would in a whole period normally. I do have a coil check booked in but it will be another 3 weeks. Otherwise I think I will have to go to the local urgent care clinic to get seen.

I had a copper coil fitted at the end of June and had it removed last week because I'd bled constantly ever since despite being given tranexamic acid, noresterone and the combined pill to stop it. I also had constant cramping.

I had one put in during spring. Second period after insertion was really heavy (after having light periods for years), the third one was 11 days long and the start of it was heavy. They are mostly medium to light now and much improved, not as light as they were but nothing like the heavy in the early days. During the third period I wanted to have it removed but I glad I persevered.

Beautiful3 · 01/10/2019 21:17

Yes the same happened here. After 6 months my periods calmed down though.

ClaudiaSchiffersUglySister · 02/10/2019 02:15

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

I did badly on the pill for example, but Mirena gives out a tiny dose of hormones right into the uterus, so it’s not quite as full on. I can see why you might not fancy it though.

Whatever we try to do to sort out our beastly hormones and contraception, we’re pretty buggered. Yay womanhood.
