'Scary' movie suggestions for 13/14 year olds.

We're trying to think of something we can all watch at Halloween but don't want the young teens to be too terrified. Ideally the same sort of scare level as Jaws but scarier than Goosebumps.

Depends totally on the child (and what you as a parent consider scary) I think.
Interview with a vampire is not a scary film imo. Nightmare on elm street or poltergeist are for me and as such I would not like dd to watch them for a couple of years. I am atm considering letting her watch se7en, as although it is jarring, I'm not sure it fits the scary mould. We watched the sixth sense recently and while I watched it (for the third or fourth time) through my fingers, she didnt think it was remotely scary. I wont consider It, but again, only because it scares me, I'm sure she would enjoy it. I have downloaded The Birds this week as possible weekend viewing but not sure I can sit through that a second time!

Maybe follow it up with a few Isis videos? Hey kids, it's family movie time!

Fuma · 02/10/2019 00:28

Sorry, that was also to Dieu.

I second ghost, or if you'd be happy with a creepy thriller instead of a horror, Dragonfly is really good!

Pinkbonbon · 02/10/2019 00:41

Totally agree with 'the facilty'. Lovedl that movie!

I'd say avoid paranormal films (too scary). Stick with werewolves, vampires and ...lighter slasher films like Scream.

WatchingTheMoon · 02/10/2019 00:51

"What about Paranormal Activity"

I had to switch that off as an adult and slept with the lights on.

I think some of you are underestimating how sensitive teenagers are. They internalise things much more than adults do and it's far harder for them to distinguish reality from fiction. Even the ones who seem ok with watching scary stuff aren't necessarily.

WatchingTheMoon · 02/10/2019 00:53

For me, The Craft or Scream are good. They have funny parts and lighter moments and would be far more suitable than anything paranormal (yes, witches are paranormal but I doubt many teenagers would be scared by them.) Ghosts can seem very real to people.

Interesting.

I am scared central, I admit. I have read through MN 'please explain this' threads on a Wednesday morning and jumped when the boiler juddered!

However, I have never willingly subjected my DSs to 'horror'. Because I was allowed as a young child to read and, maybe rather less, see it. The nights of pure terror I suffered in rural, dark Wiltshire because I expected to wake to a shrouded monk in my room; a screaming skull on my pillow; the dark-y bit of the barn us kid had been playing in that morning, to yield The Dunwich Horror at night 😂.

With DC, I actually complained to the upper infants that a free reader, Biff and Chip, had an actual 'ghost' in it. FGS.

I saw The Devil Rides Out by 14. Because my elderly, babysitting grandad didn't realise 'it wasn't suitable'.. 😊

But Poltergeist scared the shit out of me, then Carrie, It, The Shining, and, of course, The Exorcist... and, the last I saw, Sixth Sense!

I have plenty of friends who laugh their heads off at this stuff. At 56, it can still scare the bejeezus out of me! 😂

I'd stick to 'Nightmare before Christmas' and destroy you child's street cred for ever. 😊

Tho even that was quite dark!!

OhMsBeliever · 02/10/2019 01:34

The Woman In Black. My eldest son watched it at school when he was 14 and has refused to watch it again!

My twins love horror. They're 15 now, so allowed to watch most stuff. They've seen It, the original and the new one. Scream, which they liked. I probably wouldn't have let them watch those when they were younger though.

Poltergeist they enjoyed but it's a bit dated.

Sleepy Hollow didn't scare them at all and they were quite young when they watched it (because my ex let them after I'd said noHmm)

They thought Blair Witch Project was boring and crap. I've never actually seen it, so assume it's dated badly maybe?

The Craft is awesome, I must watch it with them!

Elderflower14 · 02/10/2019 02:01

DEFINITELY The Woman in Black... Scary as *!!!

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 02/10/2019 07:00

We watched The Woman in Black trailer last night and she didn't like it at all. She loves disaster movies like Twister, 28 days later, those ones with The Rock - Skyscraper and the other one, Jurassic Park etc. She insists ALL her friends have seen IT and Child's Play but I think it's possibly a badge of honour thing with young teens - who has seen the scariest movie.

Think it's the Day after Tomorrow not 28 days later. The one with the snow anywayBlush

Fuma just for the heads up, Empty Rooms is a ghost story. They're not whimsical ghosts, shall we say. One is an angry naked man! But my daughter still wasn't fazed by it - bit jumpy but nothing more.

Superzowie · 02/10/2019 07:38

Interview with a vampire is not a scary film imo

It's not scary, no, but the themes make it unsuitable for a 13yo.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 02/10/2019 08:18

I'd go old school teen comedy horror - agree with PP who said The Lost Boys, or maybe the 80s Fright Night.

Dd loves signs (aliens)
Also sixth sense
Women in black (terrifies me)

Poltergeist

It (gory but really good)

The shining

War of the worlds

Sharptic · 06/10/2019 01:14

Well I've been inspired to rewatch a couple of the films on this thread

I thought Poltergeist would be fine for my kids. Although it's a good film, after re-watching it, I thought it was a bit scary for kids, scarier than I had remembered.

And sixth sense was just about right for young teenagers, some adult bits but not too bad

TinklyLittleLaugh · 06/10/2019 01:47

Signs is very scary but only a 15 I think. Bit of a favourite in our house.

PatricksRum · 06/10/2019 05:32

In all honesty and sorry to be a killjoy but I wouldn't let a 13/14 yo watch a horror film. I think they're made for adult sensibilities.

Please.

I was watching IT circa 6/7 years old.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/10/2019 11:30

Then you had neglectful parents, maybe you should start your own thread about that.

Why do I need to start a thread?
You can't judge an entire childhood on one movie.
