How to dress 9 month baby for this weather?

Hi, I've recently moved from San Diego to London so in a bit of shock! DD is 9 months, crawling and taking steps/cruising. How do I dress her? We take the bus in her pram to nursery where they have outdoor play and patio so there are cool breezes throughout the day. How do you dress your child? Onesie under long sleeve under a sweater? With a coat over? Does she need one of these rainsuits or is she still too small?

For that age I would do, long sleeve vest, long sleeve top, cardigan/ jumper. And leggings, socks and shoes and a coat. Then pack one of those pack away all in one rain suits for nursery for if it is rainy. When it gets much colder, you could get a thicker all in one rain suit and use instead of a coat so that their legs are warm too. Nursery should be heated well. I have a recommendation of an all in one... will post in next reply

I look after a two year old but she wears similar clothes to what she wore as a baby. Today she's wearing a vest, t-shirt, leggings, a lightweight cardigan, when we go out in the pram she has a raincoat and waterproof trousers and wellies.
If your little one is crawling, some sort of waterproof trousers or an all in one is invaluable when they are playing outside at nursery. JoJo maman Bebe do a really good range of waterproofs and cold weather gear for babies and toddlers, I think there is a Mumsnet discount code too.

These are great as they are removable. Quite expensive though. You could have a look on ebay or facebook or see if there are cheaper ones around.

Thank you! Sorry, still getting familiar with UK terms here...
vest=sleeveless top with snaps on crotch?
tights under pants, or just warm leggings are enough

any brand suggestions/recommendations appreciated, thank you Smile

Oh and she's a total stringbean, 99% height, 40% weight, so any recommendations for long and skinny LOs are appreciated as well!

That is what I class as long sleeve vest.

In this weather I think warm leggings are enough. As the weather gets much colder then I would do thicker or maybe tights under trousers.
I'm a nanny and my little one is wearing shorts still 😂 it isn't really cold it is just wet. I'm sure he'd be in shorts all year if he could.

jennie2019 · 01/10/2019 13:58

And do we need gloves, hat? She's just started cruising so haven't bought real shoes yet. I am seeing lots of thick padded coats with fleece lining, is that too warm for London? Feels quite cold to me but she actually seems warm, gets a bit sweaty when nursing, but looking at 30 day forecast, seems temps will be high 50s/low 30s!!

At 9 months I would be dressing her in long sleeve vest, long sleeved T Shirt, either jogging bottoms, leggings or dungarees, socks, have a jumper, cardigan or hoodie & a coat if in the pram, a cosy toes & waterproof cover to keep them warm & dry, cruising type shoes or trainers. If you want to dress her in dresses, then tights or leggings & a pinafore type dress over long sleeved T shirt & vest. If you are out in the car put cardigan or hoodie on whilst in car seat & a blanket over legs once strapped in.

bbciii · 01/10/2019 14:01

Are you in London @jennie2019 ? This morning I dressed DD 7 months in short sleeve onesie, long sleeve wool jumper, thick gilet, leggings, socks, and cellular blanket over the top while in the pram. Once indoors, I take the gilet off.

NannyR · 01/10/2019 14:05

These fleece lined all in one's are great here, they are so cosy and really waterproof. They are a bit pricy, but there is usually a discount code around and I've seen them passed down through several children and still looking good, so they've probably got good resale value. JoJo also do good fleecy hats and gloves.

Top tip if they keep pulling gloves off and it's really cold; get a pair of adult socks and put them on their hands all the way up to their arm pits then put their coat on top.

Blubluboo · 01/10/2019 14:14

Don't worry about shoes then, I forgot she was only 9 months. 2 pairs of socks on really cold days would work I guess!

jennie2019 · 01/10/2019 14:17

Ooh, so cute! And love the sock tip!!

Yes, @bbciii, in London. We bought one of those wool liners for the buggy but the nursery has the door open all day. Feels hot on bus and warm inside nursery, but she is allowed to come and go as she pleases and doors are open to main play area.

I'm in London.

Today mine is wearing:

  • short sleeve vest
  • long sleeve top
  • socks
  • leggings
  • cardigan for the car/baby carrier, with hoodie/fleece for push chair

She takes the socks off so I have cosy toes on the push chair with a cellular blanket in the basket. If she is in the baby carrier she can put her legs and feet around me and I can cover them with my hoodie and coat.

If it gets colder during the week I may swap to tights. If I swap to a wrap rather than a carrier then I will ditch the cardigan and top, and put a long sleeve vest on.

No need for long sleeve vest, hats and gloves/mittens just yet.

Blubluboo · 01/10/2019 14:27

They should put a coat on her if she is going outside really.

coffeeaddiction · 01/10/2019 14:32

Jojo Mamam Bébé have extra thick leggings , I found they come up small on my chunky baby but if she's a little skinnier then they should fit brilliantly

randomsabreuse · 01/10/2019 14:40

Long and slim (scrawny) - look at Vertbaudet, Primark (their skinny jeans are about the only trousers (i.e. not leggings) that have ever worked for my 4yo. Sainsbury's is the best shaped supermarket brand for emergency clothing grabs if necessary. Other French and southern European brands if you have access to them - the nice Scandi brands tend to be more generous.

I highly recommend tights instead of socks in winter. Neither of mine kept socks on for more than 5 minutes when "free" to attack them - whether in stroller or free range. Socks fine in a sling because they just can't reach!

notso · 01/10/2019 16:58

In cold weather I liked lined dungarees with a short sleeved vest, long sleeved top and a cardigan over the top if needed or heavy jersey onesies usually from GAP.

jennie2019 · 01/10/2019 18:33

That’s great, thanks! What about heavier coats/jackets? Temps are going to be in the 30s at night later this month, I guess we should invest in a proper coat as well? Honestly I almost turned the heat on today Confused

I’m in the South East and find it’s still pretty mild here. DS (12 months) is mostly in joggers/leggings with a T-shirt and a jumper/cardi. Sometimes the cardi has to come off because it’s too warm! He sometimes has a jacket or warmer jumper if he’s sitting in the pushchair as he’s not moving around. He wears a splash suit and wellies if he’s in the garden or at the park. As he’s not walking properly yet, I don’t bother with shoes unless he’s crawling around outside. He won’t start wearing a vest until it gets a bit cooler I don’t think but we have quite a cold house so he is well acclimatised to cooler temperatures, your LO might be a bit different, being used to warmer weather!

TinyMystery · 01/10/2019 18:42

Although I’ve just checked the forecast and it says the low tomorrow morning is 4 (degrees Celsius)!!! 4!! Scratch that. He’ll definitely be in a proper warm coat!

umberellaonesie · 01/10/2019 18:49

The general rule is one more layer than you.
Cosy toes or blanket for when in the buggy.
So top half -
vest (envelope neck, poppers, short or long sleeve.
T shirt (short or long sleeve)
Cardigan or sweatshirt
Bottom half-
Pants (leggings, dungarees)
Skirt with leggings or tights
Socks
Shoes
Light waterproof coat, I wouldn't get a thick winter jacket yet as in the buggy they have a blanket you can add or remove if on hot bus, warm shop etc
An all in one waterproof suit or waterproof dungarees would be good for nursery.

jennie2019 · 01/10/2019 19:27

Thank you all, this is so helpful. I literally am clueless.
