Holiday complainers

We've recently returned from an all inclusive holiday and whilst we were there quite a few people were complaining about the food. An number of other guests were telling everyone they met that they were eating out for most meals and would be keeping the receipts so they could get a refund from the travel agent. I overheard one discussion where a family were telling others that they had been using credit cards for meals so they would have a refund before they needed to pay for it. Some seemed to be taking great pleasure in the idea that they had a way to 'cheat the system' and to be honest I felt really sorry for the hotel staff as some seemed to be getting great pleasure from finding fault with everything.

There was no suggestion it was making people ill etc- they just didn't like it and felt there should be more choice/more familiar dishes etc. It was quite repetitive but we took the view that the hotel was quite small and not much more expensive than self catering so obviously it would not be 5* food etc and we budgeted to eat out some of the time.

Am I out of line for thinking these people will probably have gone home to big bills they won't get refunded for, so if they wanted 5* food they would have been better just paying more initially?

I go all inclusive and eat out every day. You don’t pay much for the all inclusive element even in top hotels- you can usually justify it with having breakfast and a few drinks a day at the hotel

I've also read for a hotel in Greece before where the complaint regarded stray cats. The lady appeared to spend her holiday then tracking down cats to take photos of, and then complained the cats weren't 'friendly enough', as rather than leaving them alone she'd clearly attempted to man handle one which had scratched her.

I worked with a joyless lady who complained bitterly about every holiday. Once she complained cause the waiter brought her full fat coke instead of Diet Coke once by mistake, and that the Chinese restaurant next to the hotel charged 20p for soy sausage. Full written complaint.

I'm just intrigued by whether any one knows anyone who is successful?
My parents had friends who used to complain to get a free night in a premier inn. They stopped going away with them as it was so embarrassing as there was no cause to complain.

Classic brits abroad situations. I once heard someone on a Spain transfer saying 'oh don't go to that area there's to many Spanish its dangerous' made me laugh out loud, comedy gold!

Reviews can be great.
I read one about a resort in Maldives we stayed at which complained about the sand. It was too gritty apparently.
Another for a resort complained about Mexicans carrying machetes. The resort was in Mexico and people garden with machetes there.
Someone else complained they had gone to a animal rescue place but seen a large spider. It was in a jungle.

I once saw someone complaining that what appeared to be a big beach on their arrival had shrunk by the next morning so after that they decided to stay by the pool!! Apparently the hotel staff were unhelpful when asked why the beach was smaller than they anticipated... wish I could find that review it was ace..I always hoped it was tounge in cheek surely no one is quite that stupid? They also complained there was quite a lot of sea food!

we dont normally go AI but this year decided to give it a go in Spain at a typical costa del sol hotel, and yes the food at dinner and lunch wasnt fillet steak and hand cooked triple fried chips, but there was enough choice of cold salads, meats cheeses and fish with choices of veg and potatoes that no one would starve, and desserts were more than acceptable,

breakfast there were alternatives to the typical hammy type bacon and hot dog sausages, i ate yogurt and honey, fresh fruit, pastries and scrambled egg on toast so more than enough to keep you going for the morning,

we ate out the last night of our holiday as it was the last night, and a few lunch times if we were out for the day most of the people in the hotel were brits and opinions ranged from food ok to yuk its vile, this was the same food for everyone
