Contraception to stop my periods

theoriginaltms · 01/10/2019 09:15

So yesterday I came across a post where somebody said they were on a certain contraceptive and it stopped there periods, I can't remember what it was or where I found the thread.

I'm on the pill currently but the last few months my periods have gone from 5 days to 10-12 days.

Can somebody recommend something to stop my periods altogether. Thankyou in advance

I have had the mirena coil for a few years now and don't have periods so I can recommend it. Some people still do though so it may not do that for you. The downside was after the initial fitting I bled for weeks, but once it stopped, it stopped for good.

listsandbudgets · 01/10/2019 09:35

I have the mirana coil. I've barely had a period for years - my only worry is I'll go through the menopause and not realise. Every now and then I get a very light bleed for a day or two at most.

Getting it put in isn't the most comfortable of experiences if I'm honest but once its fitted its great

Word of caution though is that I have seen some people say that they've had some bad side effects from it but the good news is that if that happens, its very easy to remove :)

dementedpixie · 01/10/2019 09:39

Nothing is guaranteed to stop them. Cerazette stopped mine but others get prolonged bleeding. Mirena coil also stopped them. Depo made me bleed.

Is it the combined pill you use? You could run packs together to hopefully get fewer periods

Just don't have a week off between packs - take the pill every day and you won't get periods. Or get the Depo Provera injection every three months - no periods. Or get an implant - no periods.

@smileandsing @listsandbudgets where is the coil fitted is it inserted into you?

@dementedpixie it's yacella pill. Would it be ok to just keep taking with no week break?

I had the Nexplanon implant (arm) for 5 years. Zero periods.
Not guaranteed obviously, my friend didn't get on with it and bled constantly. Not heavily, just always something there.

SlavesToTheKitchen · 01/10/2019 10:21

I'm on cerazette and get no periods.

listsandbudgets · 01/10/2019 10:57

Yes its put inside you. They open you up with a speculum the same way as they do for a smear test and then use a tube containing the coil to go up your cervix. They pull out the tube leaving the coil inside you.

When they did mine they used some kind of local anaesthetic gel (not needle don't worry)

It is only suitable if you have had a vaginal birth by the way - or at least that's what they told me at the time.

PS if you're due a smear test they can probably do it while they're at it - if you've got to go through the indignity of it all they may as well make it worth while :)

I'm on the mini-pill (Cerelle) and haven't had a period for two years. It's awesome.

Confusedbeetle · 01/10/2019 11:09

You really should be talking to your gp about this, not mn

RushianDisney · 01/10/2019 11:12

Unfortunately there isn't any reliable way of telling how a form of contraception will work on an individual. I had the implant, which at the time claimed something like 90% of women had no periods when using it, every single person I knew who got it, including myself, bled constantly. But we were all teenagers at the time so I wonder if that had an effect.

dementedpixie · 01/10/2019 11:17

Mirena is put into the womb through the cervix.
@ShippingNews, depo made me bleed so its not guaranteed to stop periods. Neither is the implant

bengalcat · 01/10/2019 11:19

Talk to your GP / contraception provider . Options might include taking the combined oral contraceptive continuously without a break , cerazette , Mirena coil , progesterone implant .

Damntheman · 01/10/2019 12:42

I'm on microgynon. It technically has a week break between packs but for that one at least there's no actual need to do the week break. I will let myself bleed on occasion, mostly to reassure myself that I'm not actually pregnant (I'm weird, I know :p) but usually don't have a period for months and months at a time because it's just blissfully easy not to!

HoldMyLobster · 01/10/2019 12:54

Depo Provera here - haven't had a period since 2004.

InOtterNews · 01/10/2019 15:39

Depo Provera for me also. No periods for at least 15 years
