Is Seattle worth a visit?

I want to plan a trip for my 40th birthday. I’ve always fancied Seattle (Frasier, Greys Anatomy) but i have never actually been to the States before.

Is it worth a visit?

Ive got a wedding in Canada in March. Edmonton. I was thinking about doing Seattle (huge Frasier fan and yes, i know it wasnt filmed there) then going up to Vancouver and fly accross to Edmondon. Does this sound like a trip that could be abit “tame”? Im not really outdoorsy and ive done Canada before. Im also going to be on my own so i dont need too much contemplation next to yet another lake/mountain.

I was in Seattle last year and wouldn’t rush back. There is a huge homeless population downtown, literally camps of tents right next to famous landmarks like Pike Place market. I’ve lived in London and other big cities and have never seen anything like it. The surrounding landscape is nice and it is useful for combining with a trip to Canada or the rest of the Pacific Northwest, but I wouldn’t linger in Seattle itself.

We did Seattle for a couple of days either side of an Alaskan winter trip (over Xmas back in Seattle for NYE). It was about 10 years ago. Snowy as heck, damp with drizzle, half of the city sightseeing stuff was closed. Absolutely loved it anyway.

As a base for a week in the late spring/summer/early autumn it would be even better. A few days of city stuff, interspersed with trips out on the ferry to somewhere like Vashon (sp?) Island, some hiking in the mountains, etc would be amazing.

The food culture is awesome and there's only so much one can eat in a day, so a week with other trips interspersed would be heaven to me.

Seattle is good fun. The downtown area is way more than just pike place, there’s loads of American shopping and you can take the monorail to the space needle & pop culture museum.

Rent a car and go to snoqualmie, see the twin peaks falls & eat in the twin peaks diner.

Check out uwajimaya, very cool Asian supermarket.

Woodland park zoo then head to Fremont to see the troll and have all the beer & artisanal ice cream you can handle.

Definitely worth a trip.

I thought that till I moved there and couldn't find any good coffee. It's got better since then - it used to have Tullys on every corner but they seem to have gone. Breweries everywhere now.
