Do you have an easy way of doing a roast dinner?

I'm currently in the throes of trying to produce a roast dinner. I seem to have used every saucepan, bowl and roasting pan in the house!

Surely there's a better way!

If you're really good at roast dinners and can do it without ransacking the kitchen, I'd love to hear your hints and tips!

Meat in the slow cooker.
Oven on, spuds in.
parsnips, carrots in one tray in the oven.
I even shove sweet corn in a bowl of water in the oven while it’s on.
Instant gravy and frozen Yorkshire’s in last minute.

Done.

crosser62 · 29/09/2019 18:58

Slow cooker for just about every meal to be fair, I use those liners too. Cuts down on washing up. Just a wipe out.

Angrybird123 · 29/09/2019 19:05

Roasties in the same roasting tin as the meat, wash the saucepan you par-boiled them in and use it for any veg to be boiled, another tray for any roast veg. Meat out onto carving dish, frozen yorkies in briefly with potatoes, when they are out, make the gravy in the roasting dish. Two trays, a couple of saucepans tops.

Get dressed
Drive to nearest destination pub/carvery

Angrybird123 · 29/09/2019 19:06

Oh and keep a sink full of hot water so any spoons or whatever that get used can be quickly washed as you go along. Have a glass of wine on the go and the radio and enjoy the 90 odd minute excuse for some alone time. Someone else washes and clears up after.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 29/09/2019 19:08

My husbands just done a pot roast. Everything in one pot, easy peasy - it’s smells amazing I’m so excited 👌😋

Jesse70 · 29/09/2019 19:18

I really cheat for a quick one
Extra tasty chicken from Asda it's in a bag so no mess and it collects all the juices to add to the gravy
Frozen roast potatoes
I microwave potatoes if I want mash then scoop it out
Veg only uses one pot
I do my own yorkies but I make alot of the batter then keep the jug and use it for pancakes the next morning

SpaceDinosaur · 29/09/2019 19:19

Meat in oven
Spuds in
Veg in slow cooker
Meat on a board cover in foil and tea towel.
Whack up heat
Make gravy on yob whilst cooking yorkies and crisping up spuds.

Mmmm

SpaceDinosaur · 29/09/2019 19:19

Steamer. Bloody veg in steamer 🤦🏻‍♀️

Strawberrycreamsundae · 29/09/2019 19:21

The joint of pork/beef/lamb or chicken goes in slow cooker on a bed of carrots, onions, parsnips with a hefty slug of red wine (or stock), potatoes and Yorkshire puds in oven. Put on peas and beans if liked.
Lift out meat when cooked, take out most of veg and keep warm, blitz wine/stock and remaining veg to make gravy.
Done!
One slow cooker crock, one saucepan, couple of trays and blender stick to wash, simples 😋😋

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2019 19:26

My laziest (just for dp and I) =

Sainsbo's nut cutlets
M&S cauliflower cheese
Roasted potatoes, carrots, shallots, garlic, leeks all in one pan
Green beans
Bisto

Must admit I'm not a huge roast fan, so Christmas dinner is probably the only time I ever do a 'proper' one.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2019 19:26

Oh and Paxo - love the stuff.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/09/2019 19:28

Buy a rotisserie chicken, warm it through. Boil a mixed bag of veg. Microwave some frozen mash. Stir water into Bisto. Chuck a giant Yorkshire Pud each into the oven with the warming chicken.

I'd only do this for us four though. If I had guests I'd use all the pans, panic, make own everything and slowly get pissed on Gin.

We don't eat roasts very often.

Collision · 29/09/2019 19:29

Rotisserie chicken
Frozen roast potatoes
Frozen Yorkshire pudding
Large pan for broccoli, carrots and sprouts
Gravy
Stuffing

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 29/09/2019 19:32

Ooo ooo I can do this one!! Chicken in a bag. Roast potatoes in a foil dish. Ready made yorkshire puds. Ready made gravy. Microwave veg like mashed carrot and swede, red cabbage, greens, broccoli etc. Expensive but so easy!!

EspressoPatronum · 29/09/2019 19:40

Roasting ton with potatoes, carrots, onion, parsnip and meat.

Boil broccoli and peas.

Frozen Yorkshires.

Stuffing

Gravy

Done!

EspressoPatronum · 29/09/2019 19:40

Roasting tin not ton!

CherryPavlova · 29/09/2019 19:45

One at for meat followed by roast veg in another tray both in Aga and left. Cauliflower cheese from freezer (bulk make and freeze) put into baking oven, stuffing balls in beside meat. Green veg in microwave usually. Make gravy in tray when meat is resting. Bread sauce/mint sauce/Apple sauce made by someone else under close supervision.

Crystal87 · 29/09/2019 19:47

Roast the meat in one tray, potatoes in another. Veg can either be tinned or steam bags, or from a frozen bag done on the hob.

Fizzypoo · 29/09/2019 19:53

No you're all wrong.

For an easy roast I get up in the morning and prep listening to the radio or a podcast. Peel potatoes and veg, stick loads of garlic and herbs in meat. Lemon up a bum if its chicken. If I'm pushed for time on a sunday I slow cook lamb on a bed of onions, carrots, garlic and wine.

Stuffing balls made up ready and trayed up, cauliflower cheese made the day before but not cooked through.

When meat is done potatoes go in top shelf, roast veg in bottom. 20 minute later cauliflower cheese goes in, 20 minutes later stuffing balls go in and hob veg goes on.

Make gravy, slice and tray up meat, get shit out the oven, drain hob veg and boom best roast ever!

Roast dinners not made this way are not roast dinners. Your ways of making fame roasts are for midweek cheats.

PastTheGin · 29/09/2019 19:55

Roast chicken legs, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, cherry tomatoes, garlic, rosemary and a splash of olive oil in a big roasting tin. You could make gravy but we just serve with sauce béarnaise. Yum!

BarbaraofSeville · 29/09/2019 19:57

Do a massive roast and save the leftover meat. Slice and freeze in appropriate sized portions. We often get a turkey butterfly at Christmas - single massive turkey breast. Warm up in gravy when you fancy a roast. I don't see why it wouldn't also work with pork, beef, lamb etc. We've had at least half a dozen extra roast dinners like this, maybe more.

Freeze any leftover stuffing too.

When you want your 'shortcut roast' get some fresh broccoli because it's quick and easy to prepare and cook, and maybe canned sweetcorn or whatever other veg you can be arsed with.

Ready made roasties and instant gravy (bisto best is fine). I can do a simple roast dinner in about 45 minutes with the above and it's perfectly nice. It would probably be quicker if I didn't insist on the roast potatoes being really well cooked and crispy.

We also often go for a carvery instead if it's just me and DP. I've decided that the Farmhouse Inn chain is nicer than Toby - we don't have any good independents round here, and I'm not that bothered about Yorkshire pudding - these are better at Toby but everything else nicer at Farmhouse Inns.

dementedma · 29/09/2019 19:57

What is with cauliflower cheese and roasts? I only ever see this on MN. What a horrible combination. Never come across it in real life.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/09/2019 19:58

I disagree demented - I love cauliflower cheese on roasts and forgot to mention it. The Aldi ready made one in a bag is quite nice and you can just use what you need to instead of a whole ready made tray.

Fizzypoo · 29/09/2019 20:00

@dementedma ah I love cauliflower cheese with a roast. It's on the menu for the majority of pub roasts too.
