What are the easiest plants to keep alive?

I want some new plants for my house. I've had them before but they always die. I even managed to kill a cactus once.

What are the easiest, least maintenance ones to keep alive? I don't know how I manage to kill them, but I really like having plants around the house.

I recommend these people as they give great advice and the plants are lovely

They even have a section called ‘Unkillable Houaeplants’.

Aloe is one of the easiest we’ve found- not even my mum killed mine after I moved out (10 years ago) and up to that point killed every plant she touched. They’re also useful for cuts/ grazes/ lip balms. We have one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen. Out bathroom barely gets light and the aloe’s are fine

@laundry, you just need to cut back the orchid stem for re flowering, it's easy. It will surprise you Look on net.

theneverendinglaundry · 29/09/2019 19:48

#longwayoff I'll try next time!!

I have a peace lily, anyone know how I get that to flower again?

StoatofDisarray · 29/09/2019 19:59

I'm shit with plants but my monstera is thriving!

Tobebythesea · 29/09/2019 20:00

Cactus and orchid (surprisingly)

PotPlantKiller · 29/09/2019 20:10

I havent even name changed for this thread.... I have managed to keep my spider plant alive so far.

OctopusNow · 29/09/2019 20:17

I have an "air plant", claims not to need water at all.... I haven't had it long though so I'm not sure how it will survive in my house of plant death.

Only things I can vaguely keep alive so far is ivy.

Ikea's Aloe plants are invincible, and cheap.

Also, our local B&M sells orchids for £4 (which is ridiculously cheap) and I've never managed to kill one of those yet.

Snake plant (MIL's Tongue) I don't really do anything with mine. Give him a drink when I remember. I have killed an Aloe Vera but have two Parlour Palms that are quite easy too.

Those are beautiful soola, but I fear that that website underestimates my ability to kill plants.

That's lovely, Greyhound.

I just don't understand the watering situation with plants. I water them and they die. I'm told I've overwatered them so I stop, and they die. Complete nightmare.

I have found the best watering method is to pour the odd remains of glasses of undrunk water on them before returning the empty to the kitchen. Then you don't overwater plus it's room temp etc

boringisasboringdoes · 29/09/2019 21:40

But you can get stick things that tell you when they've dried out. Plant food also makes a big difference

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2019 21:49

DP has kept a peace lily alive for nearly a year now.

Interesting to see so many people mentioning orchids. I'm going to get one and see if I can kill it as easily as I kill most plants (I'm banned from touching the peace lily).

SalamanderOnHoliday · 29/09/2019 21:52

Ha plant is more likely to die from over than under watering. Lift the pot up and if they are light then water but don’t let sit in water.

Also feed occasionally. Most plants like light but mot direct sun light all day.

Racheyg · 30/09/2019 08:42

It's so funny people mentioning cactus.

I've killed every single one 😢

70rule · 30/09/2019 10:02

I've got 3 little mini cactuses (cacti), and I've killed one so far. They can thrive in the desert with no water, but can't hack my windowsill.

cardamoncoffee · 30/09/2019 10:14

I'm good with plants but the only room that I have good light in is ironically the coldest. All of my cacti have died in there.

CrumpleHornedSnowcack · 30/09/2019 10:20

strangely i've found Orchid's the easiest, stick mine in a pot of water every 2-3 weeks & keep it on a not too hot window sill & it's really happy
