Do you keep your children's old school bools

Just that really. DS and DD came home at the end of term in July with all their books. They've been in the corner of my bedroom since then.

Do I keep them? I've got no where to really store them. Will I miss them?

I've got ds' from reception- year 3 but I don't see how I can keep all of them for ever and wondering if I just chick the lot.

Someone please talk some.sense into me.

I throw them away. I feel quite bad but honestly, with two children bringing home about ten books each per year, I'm going to be overrun. I rip out and keep some pages if they're particularly special

lucysmam · 29/09/2019 10:18

No! I select bits to keep and get rid of the rest.

When I first moved out of my dad's, he delivered a boat load of copier paper boxes (you know the ones that hold 5 packs of paper) full of my school books and stuff. Right from infants to 6th form. Why he'd kept it to give it all back I don't know. But I ended up with this mountain of boxes to look through that didn't contain anything much useful or of sentimental value Hmm Confused

My son could not care less about his old books so unless they are useful for the next school year out they go. My daughter cares very much and wants to keep them all. If it was up to me I’d only keep her books where she has a lot of art or writing (so English and history say, not math). My daughter is a swot, my son anything but - that may have something to do with it!

I'd love to be able to look through my old school books now I'm older but we never had the option to bring our books home at the end of the year. I don't know what the school did with them or why we weren't allowed to keep them though, just seems mean Sad

TeenPlusTwenties · 29/09/2019 10:38

Only a very few, just as a taster.

GrandmaSharksDentures · 29/09/2019 10:41

I've kept 1 maths & 1 literacy book per year so far. But he's only in Yr3

Dillydallyingthrough · 29/09/2019 10:43

I've kept all of my DDs books from reception to (currently) Y10. Tbh, I'm not sure why, it's just I feel guilty throwing them away. I've filled 3 massive storage boxes so far (that are in a storage unit Blush). I have some of my books from primark school and my DD has loved looking at them over the years. I would like a PP keep the art, English (writing stories using their own imagination or writing what they did on the weekend, etc) and get rid of the rest - this is a task I will eventually get round to!

Dillydallyingthrough · 29/09/2019 10:44

*Primary not primark

RaininSummer · 29/09/2019 10:50

Just keep a little something. I still find things from two decades ago when I have a sort out. Recently gave my 31 year old her school report from about year 9. Interesting reading it now.

AppleKatie · 29/09/2019 10:51

Keep some- like one or two each year. Maybe vary the subject or their favourite subjects. ditch the rest. You cannot keep it all!

Gertie75 · 29/09/2019 11:02

I've kept dd's but she's only in year two, I doubt I'll keep any more although I'll keep the reports for her.

I'm planning instead to do a scrap book for each dd per year, I'll add bits from school but also things from holidays, days out etc

Wheresmycider · 29/09/2019 11:37

I have started to scan pages with particularly nice work on, stored in folders by year on the pc. The rest of the book i remove blank pages for scribble paper and then pop in the recycling.

notso · 29/09/2019 12:21

No. PIL bring us boxes and boxes of DH's old stuff, school books, old paperbacks, scribbles, scout badges, so much stuff.
Most of it DH isn't interested in at all but we have to find a home for it because "My parents have kept it all these years, we can't just throw it out"

BertieBotts · 29/09/2019 12:25

Hardly any of DSes get kept. I have some of my old ones - I like those with creative tasks that give you a window into their world. So stories, diary type entries, "my ideas about..." etc.

Books of maths problems or regurgitated facts or stuck in worksheets get recycled.

Crawley65 · 29/09/2019 12:28

I had mountains of this. I eventually sorted it and have kept a small amount in individual folders from each year. Things such as special projects, a work book, a few paintings and school report. Popped it all in a nice box. More for me to look back on them for my ds!

Apple23 · 29/09/2019 12:46

Scan a few chosen pieces so you have some examples kept electronically and bin the rest.

PhantomErik · 29/09/2019 12:56

I have a folder with 20 pockets so select about 40 pages from the pile of books & keep them.

They're labelled 'DC Name Highlights from year X'.

I have 3 dc so each year these 3 folders take up less space than 1 person's total books.

I keep all the spare paper from the backs of their books & recycle the rest.

funnyfeeling · 29/09/2019 13:03

I'd keep maybe the reports and a couple of bits like projects or something. But I only have one and she's only 4 so who knows.
My parents have two boxes waiting under the spare bed for me to go through because they can't possibly throw it away! I'm 36 Grin

Fluffsmum · 29/09/2019 13:23

I'm not sure why you would, but then Im not sentimental at all. I have also thrown out all my uni notes etc.

BringOnTheScience · 29/09/2019 13:29

Many schools don't send them home. Where I taught, all books were kept for 3 years after that cohort left. "Just in case we need them as evidence" apparently.

happycamper11 · 29/09/2019 13:33

I kept them to start with but they were piling up so I'm afraid I chucked them last time I was having a clearout Blush

Blankscreen · 29/09/2019 23:21

Thanks everyone. I'm going to do the 20 page plastic wallet folder and have a cull. I'll definitely keep their reports though.

Just need to wade through it all now.

Don't be me. 9yrsx2 so far, spanning several storage boxes.

After reading this thread I need to take action!

happycamper11 · 30/09/2019 05:08

Out reports come by email so the only space they take up is in my inbox Grin
