I've just been down to the kitchen and seen water coming through the ceiling at the side of the flat roof. It's nearly 11.30PM and I don't know what to do!!

Ring your insurance company. This is what you pay those premiums for!

Span1elsRock · 28/09/2019 23:24

Blimey, are you insured? Ring your insurance company and ask for help pronto if you are. Are there electrics close to the leak?

xTinkerhellx · 28/09/2019 23:26

First of all, turn off electricity to the kitchen.

Do you own or rent? If rent, contact landlord/whoever deals with stuff in an emergency.

If owned, do you have insurance? If so, call them.

If not, Google emergency roofer and be prepared to pay a shit ton of money.

Do you have a tiled floor? Is there a quilt you can sacrifice to absorb the water?

poloarpanda123 · 28/09/2019 23:28

Hi, It's my own property and I do have buildings insurance yes.

Turn the electric off in that area by flipping the appropriate switch on the fuse board. Book a roofer to have a look at it when the weather improves (they can’t repair your roof in the pouring rain and many won’t go up there in bad weather for safety reasons). If it’s an expensive job you’ll have to call your insurance.

xTinkerhellx · 28/09/2019 23:29

Call your insurance company. They will advise.

Will do Silver

Echoing call insurance but until they can get someone out I’ve got no better advice that unplug anything on that side of the room and cover as much of the floor as you can with towels etc.

Herocomplex · 28/09/2019 23:32

Is there a downpipe close by? Check that it’s running freely. It may be that the gutter’s blocked. It sounds like the flat roof has been damaged somehow though.

Canyousewcushions · 28/09/2019 23:35

Is there another flat above you? Go and knock on their door to see if they are aware and possibly even the cause.

Assuming you're the top flat, is there anything in the loft that might be causing it (water tanks etc) and if so, have you got any idea where the stop clock would be.
Can you get up to the attic to look? If there's a leak can you catch it in a bucket and try to get a roofer out asap tomorrow/monday morning?

Tarpaulin held down with bricks or blocks on flat roof as an emergency holding repair.

TowerRingInferno · 28/09/2019 23:46

Film it on your phone - will make it much easier for whoever comes to repair it to know exactly what the problem is and where.

poloarpanda123 · 29/09/2019 00:53

It's a house so no flats. It's just got bloody worse. A guy knocked on my door about 10 mins ago. I am still awake. I went to the door and spoke through He said he was just a neighbour. I'd turned all the electricity off so my camera wasn't on and no lights!! Anyway called next door shit scared (I'm on my own with 3 kids) and she got him trying their doors on her camera.

What a bloody night.

Sorry, my very sleep addled brain 'read 'flat roof' as being the roof of a flat. Hope the remainder of your night went better!!

Fingers crossed you can get someone out today to look at it, but if not then trying to have a look yourself to make a temporary repair would certainly be a good plan.

PancakeAndKeith · 29/09/2019 08:09

Oh so this guy who knocked on the door was just some random bloke? Scary shit.

How is it looking in the morning?
