They have fences to stop people going in. It's safe

PoptartPoptart · 28/09/2019 23:08

They also have lots more signs up warning people not to enter the water.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 28/09/2019 23:33

They have fences

Dont really say why though

There are signs about every 10 metres along the waterways explaining the animals/dangers. Here's a photo I took last month.

You'd have to be at the waters edge to even read that! I was imagining something about more substantial to be fair.

AlwaysCheddar · 29/09/2019 08:11

The beaches areas have fences do you can’t go in the water. There are alligators everywhere in Florida so going into lakes is not a good idea.

WickedGoodDoge · 29/09/2019 08:28

Forget about alligators, Florida lakes have brain sucking amoeba in them! Grin

I remember when paddling in Bay Lake was popular. I shudder to think about it now.

As PP have mentioned, there are ropes and signs, and in many places, rock barriers. You really can’t miss them when you are there.

carrie74 · 29/09/2019 09:49

There are alligators everywhere in Florida. If there is an area of fresh water, there will be alligators living in it. Just be aware, and don't go swimming in any lakes.

nikkylou · 29/09/2019 11:19

How sad, and honestly I wouldn't know about alligators being there.

If you're not in country or state that alligators lurk in the water, it wouldn't occur to you that the lake might have them.

You might think it ignorant, but I dont believe everyone knows what's native to every region and I would expect attractions such as Disney 'control' the wildlife, in a similar way to keeping rats out.

I'd also assume that Disney and any other hotel park, would do their best to warn non-state or foreign visitors about dangers of the native wildlife if its not something they can eliminate.

AlwaysCheddar · 29/09/2019 11:32

How stupid! Disney is twice the size of Manhattan! They can’t fence it in! It’s all built on swampland. Do some research when you go on holiday.

Pringlemunchers · 29/09/2019 11:38

I saw an alligator get run over once !

SouthWestmom · 29/09/2019 13:05

I disagree that it's stupid. My starting point would be that Disney properties were safe, and unless it was massively flagged up in the literature (no idea, never wanted to go to America) I wouldn't think that a beach would have alligators. As a non expert on wild life I would assume there were measures you could take to make bodies of water safe. Clearly not alone as this tragic incident shows.

Fluffsmum · 29/09/2019 13:20

nikkylou there are notices up and down the highway, at almost every water area, there's aligators on the side of the highway (where there are swamps and ditches). When you are there it is virtually impossible to miss them or signs.

It's terribly sad that the little boy died but honestly, alligators are as prevelent as rats just much larger and more dangerous. There's signs everywhere.

scrappydappydoo · 29/09/2019 13:36

I think the thing with Disney is that you tend to get swept up into a bit of a bubble that makes some people more complacent whether that is wildlife or even just keeping your belongings safe. So normal precautions that you might take when going somewhere new tend to go out the window.

They do try and control wildlife but as a previous poster says it’s tricky due to the size and proximity of the parks. Whilst absolutely tragic this was the first incident in almost 50 years which if you consider the millions of people who have visited is extremely isolated.

OP is there particular reason why you are asking?

Some of the villas in more countrified areas have woken up to alligators in their swimming pools
In Celebration there are people employed to drive round the lakes in buggies to chase them back into the lakes
They usually only remove them when they are about 6 feet long

We’ve got to remember when we go to Florida..it’s ‘their’ territory we are borrowing
For years most of Florida was just overgrown with swamps, overgrowth, and critters.
That’s why the villa owners find snakes on their properties, sunning themselves on the lawn. My friend found one chopped neatly into one inch segments in her air con unit
Another friend had a scorpion in her show.
I saw a bald eagle stood on its prey, an armadillo at the back of our villa
Turkey vultures would sit on the roofs and then attack the rubbish bags, raccoons would also pull them to bits
Buzzards flew overhead and my friend saw a little brown bear in the woods.
This was in Kissimmee
And then there were the cockroaches 😱 fire ants , 😱, mosquitoes 😱
Hurricanes , lightning strikes..lost my two tvs to one
The person who came to repair my roof, had his neighbour ring him after the last bad hurricane about ten years ago, to ask if he was missing a tree as it was in his swimming pool.

All of this and yet we still buy into it/ still visit in our droves.

SouthWestmom · 29/09/2019 13:52

Reading the report the alligators were spotted and staff alerted at the beach about 45 minutes before the incident but no one stopped them going in the water.

Branleuse · 29/09/2019 14:01

Its alligator country. I think people think that because its disney, that maybe all the animals are disney animals.

Lardlizard · 30/09/2019 23:14

Reason I ask is because I’m honking of going there again
Last time I went here about 15 years ago
People were encouraged down to the “beach areas” lakeside
With playgrounds and all sorts
