Does anyone have a child that doesn’t have a games console?

I don’t like a lot of the games that are played on consoles. I accept DC will have one eventually, just not now. They play on the tablet, though we limit the time on it, and we love a good YouTube disco. My aim is to avoid DS in particular having one because he would want todo it all the time.

SoyDora · 29/09/2019 13:53

Yeah but they’re only 6 and 4 so it hasn’t even occurred to me go get them one.
If they show an interest in the future we’ll think about it then.

Ozgirl75 · 29/09/2019 13:55

@GetUpAgain I didn’t mention the sports and music to be superior - merely to show that they wouldn’t really have time to play on the games console and that’s probably why they haven’t asked for one.

But really I think it’s because kids like doing different things. Mine don’t mind playing games but here in Australia I don’t think consoles are as popular as hardly any of my sons’ friends have one, and certainly not for online gaming at this stage.

GetUpAgain · 29/09/2019 14:11

Sorry @ozgirl75 I didn't mean to say you or anyone was being superior. Rereading my post I sound snarky and I just meant 'consoles aren't bad they are just like everything else'.

Ozgirl75 · 29/09/2019 14:20

No worries @GetUpAgain - i can’t always figure out tone online, sometimes I read back what I’ve read and think “it didn’t sound like that in my head at all”.

And I agree, anything can be bad if you’re doing it all the time, but consoles are fine in a life with plenty of other stuff going on.

DD is 12 and apart from a half-hearted attemp to dig out an ancient Wii she has no interest at all. Neither DH nor I play. We spend too much time on the tablet with games but that’s it.

Mistigri · 29/09/2019 15:16

We've never had one. Kids have never asked for one.

DS16 occasionally plays games on his laptop.

DD18 not interested in computer games.

Greenglassteacup · 29/09/2019 15:17

No games consoles here. Nearly aged 9

sanityisamyth · 29/09/2019 15:19

DS is 5 and has my old iPad mini but we don't have any consoles. I was thinking of buying a Switch at Christmas but don't feel any need for one.

OhMyDarling · 29/09/2019 15:21

Nope none
Just iPhones

WellTidy · 29/09/2019 15:22

We got a switch for DS when he was 11. He was the last child in his class to have one. He didn’t ask for one, but I observed that there was a social divide between him and the other children and I think it has been good for him in terms of narrowing that divide. Of course, now I can’t get him off it 😂

Parsimon · 29/09/2019 15:25

Mine don’t. Eldest 13. Have phones (with limits on screen time) and eldest 2 use laptop for schoolwork and a bit of Minecraft

Onatreebyariver · 29/09/2019 15:27

Yes I do but it’s not that surprising as kids are only 3,5&7. But certainly don’t plan to get one.

We’ve spent today doing jigsaws, Lego and monopoly. I think if we had a console they’d just be glued to that. Which is such a waste of a day.

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/09/2019 15:29

Dd2 is 9 and doesn't have a console. She does have access to my laptop whenever she wants though, and uses that to play Roblox, Minecraft or the Sims 4. She would play those same 3 games on a console if she had one.

When dd1 was the same age she had a Wii, and a DS. She's now 19 so they are long gone, but she bought herself a switch a few months ago. She didn't have access to a laptop though. So it's swings and roundabouts really, they have had the same access to gaming, but on different devices.

Starlight456 · 29/09/2019 15:33

My Ds recently had homework he could do on minecraft. So did.

I think people read newspaper articles about kids playing x box ps and think everyone is addicted .

There can be an in between. I have seen the trash they watch on YouTube . I would rather Ds was playing on x box chatting to mates than mindless YouTube watching.

My Ds on wet miserable Sunday , has done some hw, stuff for scouts badge, baked a cake, played a couple of board games, tidied room, and watched a film . The rest of the time has been on his x box . Not bad I think.

Faircastle · 29/09/2019 15:45

We have an old Wii which they use occasionally.
They played Minecraft / Fortnite type games on the PC or a laptop; the youngest still does sometimes.
They haven't complained about the lack of gaming console.
They're in their late teens now, so I don't think we'll be buying one.
