Anyone seen the film of The Goldfinch?

Was looking forward to it having read the book, but have noticed that it has had some pretty dire reviews from the critics (not that film critics' views always correspond to those of cinema goers generally!) If you've seen it, what did you think?

Following as I love the book but must admit I have reservations about how well it will translate into a film.

KurriKurri · 28/09/2019 22:02

I hated the book - so assume I won't like the film either (although presumably a film would edit out some of the tedious stuff or it would be 8 hrs long)

Dapplegrey · 28/09/2019 22:05

Sleepykat yes I agree and I have such a clear picture of how I imagine all the characters that I don’t want to have these pictures replaced by the film.
I wish Donna Tartt didn’t take 10 years to write each book!

SleepyKat · 29/09/2019 07:39

Rotten Tomatoes has the critic reviews and they’re all very negative. But also says 74% of cinema goers liked the film.

Bluesheep8 · 29/09/2019 07:51

I actually thought it would make a good film when I finished the book and I never usually think that. Interested in opinions from those who've seen it...

zafferana · 29/09/2019 07:57

I haven't seen the film yet, but I recently read and loved the book and from what I've seen the trailers suggest that the plot has been closely stuck to. I also quite like their casting choices for the various characters. I might go and see the film tomorrow.

I haven't seen it and the only non-critic review I've heard was an email from a listener to Kermode and Mayo.

She really loved the book; thought it was an absolute page turner, stayed up until 4am reading it etc. She found the film very boring.

After listening to the email and to Mark Kermode's review, I won't bother going to the cinema to see it. I might give it a go when it comes on tv/Netflix/Prime.

Thanks for the replies. Still feeling a bit undecided whether to go and see it. zafferana , if you do decide to see it, interested to hear what you think of it.

Read the book not seen it yet

Proseccoagain · 29/09/2019 21:26

Saw the film today, thought it better than the book. Main character Theo comes over as a much more vulnerable and sympathetic person than in the book and I think the film makes the story much clearer. Film is overlong though, could have done with 20/30 minutes lopping off. Some of the locations were exactly as I imagined from the book.

francienolan · 29/09/2019 22:33

I loved the book and want to see the film, but my husband hasn't finished reading it yet and I don't have anyone else to go with. So if he doesn't finish it by the time it's still in the cinema (our local cinema has pretty limited runs of anything that doesn't have Iron Man or a Jedi in it) I'll wait for it to come out on Sky Cinema.

Duvetdazed · 29/09/2019 23:18

A friend tried watching it yesterday. He said it was utterly boring and he fell asleep.

springydaff · 30/09/2019 00:59

Donna Tatty takes 10 years to write a book because she writes too much and desperately needs editing.

That said, The Goldfinch is one of my favourite books, a feelgood I return to again and again and speed read over the acres of print that should have been edited .

I know who Hobie is and I know who Boris is: I don't want some actor (

springydaff · 30/09/2019 01:01

My new phone's predictive is dumb. She is not Donna Tatty.

MissLadyM · 30/09/2019 01:30

Nicole Kidman is box office poison. She's shit in everything. I going the book boring and disappointing so will certainly give the film swerve. The Secret History is magnificent. I'm astounded that it hasn't been destroyed by a film adaptation yet!

springydaff · 30/09/2019 11:21

Swerve? Are we all channelling DT now?

rosegoldwatcher · 02/10/2019 20:22

I saw this with a friend today. I have not yet read it (have it on my Kindle) and enjoyed the film. I really want to read the book now!
Friend had read the book and whispered to me, 10 minutes in, that she didn't like the non-sequential nature of the film. When we left the cinema she said that once she had stopped comparing the film to the book she had loved it.

Apolloanddaphne · 09/10/2019 13:39

I started the book and hated it. Saw the film last night and loved it. I really liked the way it went back and forth. It made complete sense to me.

AnneKipanki · 09/10/2019 13:44

I liked the book. I will not go to see the film . I have read a couple of reviews and it did not appear to be liked .
