Someone said god knows why i say 'thanks for seeing me'... surely its just good manners/polite?

Have i been weird then thanking my private dentist at the end of the appointment?!

I always thank my dentist and nurse. It's polite.

FreezerBird · 28/09/2019 20:16

I always do - I can't imagine not thanking someone who is basically helping me stay in good health, even if I do have to pay.

(Mind you after a particularly long and uncomfortable appointment once my dentist did comment I was 'very well brought up' when I said thank you as I left.)

SwizzelStick · 28/09/2019 20:17

YANBU as it was a private dental appointment. YWBU if the dentist was an NHS one. I believe that the correct procedure when leaving an NHS dentist is to spit in their face and tell them to fuck off.

Also this reminds me I thanked the nurse after a smear last week, which does feel a bit weird! But the principle stands.

bellajay · 28/09/2019 20:17

@SwizzelStick 😂😂😂

Vix20678 · 28/09/2019 20:19

I always say thank you to anyone who has provided me with any kind of support or service.

Fantababy · 28/09/2019 20:20

I would always thank someone who provided me with a service, or helped me in some way, whether a dentist (NHS!), shop assistant, bus driver... I'm surprised that so many people don't.

Rachelover60 · 28/09/2019 20:21

Quite normal to say thank you.

Wellmet · 28/09/2019 20:21

Of course you say thanks. You say thanks in a shop, don't you?

MmmBlowholes · 28/09/2019 20:21

I say thank you to everyone for fuck all out of habit so I'd probably tell the dentist about 15 times on my way out of the door...

Windydaysuponus · 28/09/2019 20:22

I could kiss my private orthodontist tbh. He is doing an amazing job for me!!

IWouldPreferNotTo · 28/09/2019 20:22

Of course you say thank you
You're a decent human being with basic manners.

Why on earth would you not thank them?

FudgeBrownie2019 · 28/09/2019 20:22

Surely you should always thank anyone who helps/serves you?

My dentist is beautiful, so I tend to whimper and smile ridiculously as I leave his room after checkups. If I was capable of speech I'd thank him.

WhatsInAName19 · 28/09/2019 20:22

It's just basic manners to thank somebody who has provided a service to you. I'm amazed that anyone would think otherwise. Does the person who questioned it not say thank you when they've been served in a shop? Do they see service providers as being beneath them?

hairyheadphones · 28/09/2019 20:23

I always say thank you, it’s just habit to be polite.

HeddaGarbled · 28/09/2019 20:24

“Thank you” is different from “Thank you for seeing me” IMO. I’d say the first but not the second.

MajesticWhine · 28/09/2019 20:25

Of course you are not being weird. It is normal and nice manners to say thank you to anyone who is selling to you or providing you with a service.

MrsDimmond · 28/09/2019 20:29

Was their comment not meant in a sort of 'humorous' way, making a comment on how expensive treatment is? "I dont know why i thank the dentist, she should thank me the amount I pay her ..." type thing?

Of course it's polite to say thank you for a service, even if you are paying. I thank the bus driver when I get off the bus and the waiter who serves me and the plumber etc. Etc.

Nonnymum · 28/09/2019 20:31

I always say thank you. Why wouldn't you. My dentist is private but I don't think it matters whether they are private or NHS they have helped you so why not say thank you?

Mummybares · 28/09/2019 20:40

To be clear she was talking about herself;

Her: i dont know why i say thank you for seeing me to the private practice dentist.

I suppose it might have been tongue in cheek, as pp said as in so expensive? Even then, i am still grateful for their skill.

Anyway i'm relieved everyone thinks it normal to thank a person even if you are paying Grin

Id say thanks for seeing me if they had to fit me in urgently or jigged their appointments for me, otherwise 'thank you'.

museumum · 28/09/2019 20:42

I certainly say “thank you” at the end.
But “thanks for seeing me” sounds more like you’re thanking them for a special favour not a normal appointment.

Mummybares · 28/09/2019 20:42

I have recently decided to stop saying 'sorry' for everythig and anything as i realised i said it too much... i know i do say thank you a lot, too so that comment made me wonder.

OP posts:
DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/09/2019 20:45

I always thank my private dentist. If I have an emergency I always thank her for fitting me in.

I did this when I was a NHS dental patient too. Maybe I’m well mannered 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mummybares · 28/09/2019 20:47

Aww we're all such a lovely and well mannered bunch...except you swizzle..off to the naughty step Grin

They generally say something along the lines of just phone if you have any issues and I usually reply great, thanks very much, bye.
