Nephew refusing to take antobiotics any suggestions?

So my nephew has ABs he's 2. It's flavoured but quite sharp tang. They have tried mixing with juice, yoghurt, milk even letting him do it himself but just spits it out.

Any advice?

DS had flucloxacillin for cellulitis in his foot. He had one dose and spat it out, he was 11. We tried everything to try and make it more palatable with zero luck. It smells lovely but after trying it to see what the fuss was about I couldn’t blame him for refusing to take it.
After a lecture from the GP ( I didn’t have the heart to tell him I am a dentist and I know the rules) I suggested he tried it himself before passing judgement and advising mixing it with Nutella was not very helpful for a child who hates Nutella.
Luckily it responded to antibiotic cream.

Nesquick is your friend. Make up about a third of a cup of it, make it eyewateringly strong, then stir in the antibiotics. It worked every time for my children.

Antibiotic cream might be the answer

DS2 had to take flucloxicillin. It's vile tasting. He was in hospital and would have had to go IV if he'd refused to take the liquid. He had a small drink first to coat his mouth, then medicine, then more drink to get rid of the taste. Lots of fussing and protesting but it got the job done. It's not easy though, and he's usually compliant about meds.

I am so pleased that my DS (7) can now take tablets. He can even manage half a paracetamol.

baldbaby · 28/09/2019 11:01

If you blow on his face it will automatically make him swallow.

Booboostwo · 28/09/2019 11:04

It's really bad tasting. My DD had to take it four times a day for 5.5 months, it was a horror. I'm not sure how she did it at 7yo, I would have found it hard to do.

It does come in tablets so you could try opening the tablet and hiding the contents in chocolate milk. The tablet is not quite as bad tasting as the liquid, although it is still bad.

Soak toe in diluted hydrogen peroxide solution, see if you can get infection out that way.

Or try making it into a lolly with fruit juice?

This is where the French have it - everything up the bum!! My dd used to refuse calpol so we were able to get paracetamol suppositories for children from the pharmacist. She did look a but surprised at the time but it bloody worked! I have no idea about a-b’s but it might be worth looking into?

Booboostwo · 28/09/2019 19:10

This antibiotic doesn’t exist in suppository form. We live in France and it’s the first thing I thought of.

I had the same problem with DS when he was prescribed it for scarlet fever. Upset to the point of vomiting when he swallowed it then we had to start the whole sorry business all over again.

He was a little older than your nephew but I went and swapped the liquid for tablets and it was much easier. One tablet on the tongue then a Frube yoghurt straight away and swallowed it down. I think the yoghurt being thicker helped carry it down. I’d imagine a thick milkshake or soft ice cream would do the same.

Sweets. Explain it's yucky but he has to have it and can have a sweetie afterwards to get rid of the taste.

CottonSock · 28/09/2019 20:36

I've had to change my dd antibiotics before. They were vomit inducing.

No reason to force them down as perfectly nice ones exist. My gp even said try a different pharmacy as some mixes are cheaper and nasty. When they are not too bad we use chocolate button bribe.

Forcing them down caused long term food aversion for my daughter. Not recommended.
