WiFi router help please

Please will you take pity on a tech ignorant idiot.

My Netgear WiFi router has died, all the lights are out. Tried a different socket, no joy. This router is many years old and I can’t remember how I set it up.

My broadband I think is ADSL and the only device I have is an iPad Air 2. Will this be enough to set up a new router?

I am going to have to ask my ISP to resend my login details. I can see routers online from £30 up to £150 but I would really appreciate any recommendations for one that works well but has to be foolproof to set up.

I am hoping I can pop out and buy one tomorrow, maybe from Argos or a supermarket - otherwise will be Amazon order. Fingers crossed that I can get my login details over the weekend.

I am in a relative’s house using their WiFi and will have to go home shortly so please forgive me for not replying. I will pop back to check replies tomorrow.

I am sorry if this post is a mess, I am rushing and hugely stressed that my iPad is my main point of contact with my DS who is currently feeling very homesick at university. Messaging him is preferable to phoning due to crying Sad

Huge thanks in advance for any advice you can offer me.

Who is your ISP? It may be easier to just say to them

"hey, where's my integrated wifi broadband doodad" and if they don't cough it up then BT or Sky will give you one no problem (as will others).

Actually buying a router tends to be something only technical people do, as for the vast majority of people you get a decent well configured device as part of your broadband package

Shouldn't your ISP replace your router? The two providers I've been with have insisted on replacing my router, even though the problem with my connection has clearly been somewhere outside the house (the following the manual by rote rather than using common sense approach Hmm).

It would take a few days to arrive, if they will provide and you can wait.

I was originally with ADSL24 and I had to pay for a router from them.
The company was taken over a couple of times and my ISP is now Timico. Looking at their website they seem to deal mainly with businesses rather than domestic internet.

I will hang on and contact them on Monday hoping they can sort out a router. I am reluctant to move companies as I hate the malarkey of having to look for the best deal every year or so. With Timico I pay a steady amount of £25 per month for phone line, 100 minutes of calls and internet.

Thank you very much for your help.

If they refuse to provide you with a router, ensure they send you all the technical details needed to set up your own one. ADSL is usually harder (but far from impossible) to set up than 'cable' internet because it often requires some unguessable settings to be configured.

Once you've got these details or an answer from Timico let us know and we can take the next step.

It sounds like the AC/DC adapter from your router has gone wrong if you have no lights on what so ever. So it could be a case of buying a new adapter and carrying on with the same router.

Can you find the writing on it that says the volts and current?
Will be something like 12V 300mA.

I can them hopefully find a link to a replacement one.

@GandalfTheGreying I have attached a photo of the adapter. Does this Argos item look like a possible replacement please?

Yes! Looks perfect. Good luck.

It would still be a good idea to request a new router. It would make a difference to your internet speeds and reliability.

FrogFairy · 30/09/2019 09:44

I am back on my own internet to say it worked a treat. Thank you all so much for your advice.

Good point too about having a new router, I will definitely look into that ASAP.
