Who gets to be an 80s kid?

Aprinceinapaupersgrave · 27/09/2019 15:59

Or any decade really.
I was born in the mid 70s but don't feel any nostalgia for that decade even though I do have memories from then.
I was age 5-15 in the 80s and feel that I am truly an 80s kid. I have so much love for the music, the fads, the TV, the 'fashion' 😆
So when someone born in say, 1986 describes themselves as a child of the 80s I think they can't be. The things they really liked and got involved in would be from the 90s.
So, do I have a point or is my midlife crisis worse than I thought?! How much of a decade do you think you ought to have experienced before you can claim it as your own? I think at least 7 or 8 years.
And yes, I'm aware that no one 'owns' a decade. This is sort of light-hearted.

I was born the beginning of 1980.
I definitely feel I own the 80sGrin but actually know more about and feel I own the 90s too.

UnitedRoad · 27/09/2019 16:03

I was born in 71, but all my memories are of the 80s really. Most music, tv, films, clothes.

I don’t listen fondly to glam rock. My first pop star crush was Martin Fry from ABC. My friend is a year older and she loved Gary Glitter, and David Essex etc, so a years difference and she probably would consider herself a child of the 70s

juneybean · 27/09/2019 16:05

I was born 1985, I definitely feel more of a 90s kid.

SoyDora · 27/09/2019 16:06

I was born in ‘84 and consider myself a ‘90’s kid!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 27/09/2019 16:07

I was born in1986 I don't remember Nything from the 80s but would describe myself (if I had to) as a 90s kid as it was when I was a child.

NemesisThen · 27/09/2019 16:08

I was born in 1986 but I absolutely love anything 80s!the music and punk fashions especially.however I do remember more of the 90s so I would say 80s baby,90s child lol

VeganVeganVegan · 27/09/2019 16:08

Born 85 and completely relate to the 90s

SmellMySmellbow · 27/09/2019 16:10

1981 here. I feel I had an 80's childhood, so identify with all the kids 80's stuff - toys, fads and TV etc, and was a teen in the 90's, so the 90's more relevant for music and fashion than the 80's, as that's when I was really choosing and buying my own stuff independently and creating my 'style'.

Badtasteflump · 27/09/2019 16:12

I consider myself an 80's kid although I was born in the early 70's. I think it's because by the time I was old enough to really get into music and have fun with my friends, it was the 80's. I don't remember anything much about 70's music or fashion, but maybe I have a crap memory. Just about my only 70's memory is of having a painfully huge crush on John Travolta in Grease - I must have only been about five but I loved him so much I would look at his picture and cry 😍

Aprinceinapaupersgrave · 27/09/2019 16:13

I'll give you the 80s Spied 😆 You would have definitely experienced them. You were born very neatly in fact - 80s childhood and then preteen/teen throughout the 90s. I started clubbing at 16 in the 90s, then went to uni and started proper work. I feel the 90s belong to me too but I prefer the 80s as I had no responsibilities and for every good 90s memory I usually have a cringey one too!
UnitedRoad that's unusual that you don't really connect with the 70s as you were there for almost all of it but I can see how you were the right age to enjoy the 80s fully. My cousin is a couple of years older than you and she went to see bands and wore the proper clothes. Even had a Princess Di hairstyle.

I was born in '74, I'm definitely a child of the 80's.

fessmess · 27/09/2019 16:16

Born in 68 so feel I am a kid of 70s and a teen of 80s

BogglesGoggles · 27/09/2019 16:17

I was born in the nineties, don’t really remember them though.

Eminybob · 27/09/2019 16:18

I was born in 1980 so feel I’m an 80’s child. However, I’m very much a 90’s teenager and have many happy (and angsty) memories from that time. I feel a great deal of nostalgia for both decades though

Aprinceinapaupersgrave · 27/09/2019 16:19

Wow, cross posted with lots of you 😄
I am so thrilled. You are all saying what I feel.

I was born in 86 so should have love for all things 90’s but i don’t. The 80’s is where’s my heart lives Grin

I do think it’s a lot to do with all the £1 videos I rented with my sister from the local newsagent. They were all 80’s movies. And my mum has us watching lots of 80’s stuff too.

Quirrelsotherface · 27/09/2019 16:22
  1. My memories of then are there but they're much more hazy than those of the 1990's which are crystal clear still.
userxx · 27/09/2019 16:31

Born mid 70's and my memries of the 90's are very hazy :) God I loved those days.

BarkandCheese · 27/09/2019 16:33

I was born in January 1972, was 8 in 1980 and 18 in 1990. Surely that’s very definition of an 80s kid, I grew up through the 80s and became a legal adult when the decade ended.

Runningsmooth · 27/09/2019 16:37

Late 70s here. Definitely a child of the 80s.

AGermFreeAdolescent · 27/09/2019 16:39

My personal rule for claiming you are a kid of the decade you were born in is a cut off point of the year 'xxx2', possibly 'xxx3' at a push, if you were born very early in the year and have a lot of memories from when you were young. I was born in 1986 and would never claim to be a 80's kid, I was a 90's kid! I have seen comments online left by people that say they are 90's kids that were born in 1998 and yet can't remember the Millennium!

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 27/09/2019 16:43

I'm a child of the 80s (born 1980) but I don't remember much about that decade really. The 90s are where all my fond memories of growing up are based.

SoyDora · 27/09/2019 16:44

I was born in ‘84 and can’t remember the Millenium... too much Archers and lemonade Grin Envy

IamHyouweegobshite · 27/09/2019 16:46

I was born in 73, and am a definite child of the 80s. It was the time that I began to listen to the music, films, look at the fashion(Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan), TV shows, everything. I don't relate to the 70s I was too young, my parents weren't into 70s music either.

minesagin37 · 27/09/2019 16:48

Born 67 I definitely do not feel like a child of the 60s! It's 80s all the way. My memories were The Smiths, Human League, Frankie - oh the list goes on!
