Is frozen butternut squash any good?

I am making a veggie stew which calls for butternut squash. I was wondering about whether frozen butternut squash would be ok. Always feel like I could accidentally chop my hand off when peeling and chopping s fresh one!

I find that freezing and re-hearing butternut squash or sweet potato gives it a bit of a weird texture. It gets kinda mushy. It’s edible, the taste is fine it’s just the texture that changes. But definitely better fresh.

Fine if you turn it into soup though.

Did you know you can cook butternut in the skin? The skin is edible. I tend to halve them, remove the seeds, and bake them. Much easier to peel then. It was a revelation to me.

I use it a lot in soup. If it was the main ingredient i'd be a bit wary because its very soft. Its lazy i know but you can get it chopped and peeled fresh too, i think that'd be fine

I've bought frozen butternut squash before, from Sainsbury's I think it was. Used it in a stew and it was ok. Quite squishy but I may have over-stewed! Easier than all that chopping up at least.

Tastes fine to me - but is a bit spongy in texture.... I still use it when I'm in a rush though, and it's great for soup.

Tesco frozen butternut squash is the best I've used. And I use it a lot because I'm the only person in my house who eats it!

I freeze it uncooked when I peeled one and don't need it all and it is fine.Cooked in stews yeas the texture changes a bit but not too much.

You don’t need to peel or chop really - I bung a whole one in the oven, then it’s really easy to remove the skin just by pulling it and you can scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Cook it for a bit less time if you want firmer chunks.

Love the idea of bunging a whole butternut squash in the oven and then peeling when cooked. Will try that for sure!

I might be ok with frozen BN squash from what everyone has said as I am ok with squishy in a stew context.

I like idea of buying fresh peeled and cubed BN squash. Use Tesco online delivery and they don't seem to sell it in this format.

I roast mine too. Halve it, scoop out seeds, 'paint' the cut bits with olive oil and roast. I sometimes eat the skin too.

I find the coquina squash the most tasty.

PS you don't peel it once roasted, just scoop out the middle (easiest with an ice cream scoop or melon-baller).

I’ve definitely seen the prepped fresh squash in Tesco before. But if your local one doesn’t, Waitrose have it and I’m sure other shops stock it ready chopped but not frozen.

I like the frozen version.
The whole ones are slightly easier to peel if you poke them all over with a fork and then microwave them for a couple of minutes.

Frozen, it's great for soup.

I keep some in my freezer all the time along with sweet potato chunks and blitzed up with onion, garlic, lentils and spices, is amazing.

I also use frozen prepared onions. I cook for fluctuating numbers, with varying tastes and requirements. I'm struggling with waste and I got sick of throwing away onions. Frozen onions don't really go off and being able to just throw a handful of ready chopped onion into a pot is amazing. It's great for when you only really need half an onion as the other half won't need using up or go to waste. It's great for soups and stews, and is fine for my versions of chili and bolognese.

I love frozen butternut squash - I use it in curries and stews. I find the soft texture works well in those dishes.
