Anyone good at upcycling clothes? **Pic included**

I bought a jumper in a charity shop last weekend and I've just dug it out.
It's really boring but in really good condition. Please ignore the blue spot, that was an accident.

I was thinking about opening up the seams at the sides and adding lace or ribbon? Maybe lace at the bottom? Perhaps cut the next down to a V and add ribbon detail?
Also wanted to roll the sleeved up and add a button and ribbon there to hold them rolled if that makes sense...
I've never upcycled before but have mended clothes and sewn a few things before so I'm handy with overlooking and sewing.
I don't have a machine so do it by hand so simple ideas please Grin

I'd re-iterate, what others have said

Dye it, if it's cotton but remember any thread used to sew it up could well be polycotton and not take the dye

Don't cut into a knit unless you have an overlooked or excellent knitting skills (it can be salvage but it's really complicated)

Be careful about adding and what colour you add - that might work with some denim and Boro stitching or maybe some heavy cotton crocheted lace (but that's can be expensive) but it depends on what look you are going for

Upcycled cloth collective on fb might inspire you but jumpers can be tricky to alter

It only cost me £3 so I might just keep it as a weekend jumper. On really cold days I can wear it over a shirt (it's quite an open knit so you can see through it anyways). If I can find a long, lacy vest top that'll poke out the bottom, that might add a bit of pizzazz without damaging it? I bought some boots on eBay last night. I do have skinny jeans but tbh, I always bought them from newlook and this year's pair are rubbish! Far too elasticated and thin when I'd prefer something a bit thicker. I only wear high-waisted skinny/slim jeans and most the ones I find in charity shops are partially worn through on the inner thigh or crotch.

I’m sorry, OP, but it will end up looking like a craft project if you stay adding lace and things.

Just add colourful accessories or maybe a scarf.

There are easier things to upcycle do have a look on upcycle cloth collective

Dont add lace etc, itll look tacky.

Roll the sleeves up and tuck a little of the front of the jumper into your jeans.

Sorted xx

People are cutting sleeves off old jumpers ( about 6 ins long) and then wearing them under jackets and anoraks to stop the draught
My daughter got me some for my birthday and they are great in winter/ when it’s windy.
Going into the countryside today and will use them

Soola · 27/09/2019 11:42

@Dowser I’ve made some lovely neck warmers for rescued greyhounds from the sleeves of old sweatshirts!

SciFiScream · 27/09/2019 11:52

Get an old shirt and cut off the collar, cuffs and waist bits then sew into the jumper as a fake shirt underneath a jumper?

Dye it.

Dye it.

MikeUniformMike · 27/09/2019 12:45

A small pack of dye should do the jumper and something else - you could be creative by tie-dyeing and old greying t-shirt or something.
I'd go for a plum colour or something.

Dyeing something black hasn't always been successful for me, and going for a drastic colour change can result in a garment with contrast stitching. Cotton garments often have polyester thread, and it doesn't take the dye.

brassbrass · 27/09/2019 12:50

Looks like the sleeves are sewn on, could you detach them and reattach but 3/4 length as you like rolling them up?

sparklefarts · 27/09/2019 13:00

I really like it as it is
