Is mobility benefit means tested?

I’ve had to come back home from the bus stop because of my UC symptoms. I am struggling. City traffic means the busses are not on time. Quite haphazard.

I think if I could get a lift into work (I don’t drive) I could make it. I am a lot better once sitting and near a loo.

I can’t afford to pay someone for a lift everyday or take a cab.

Would there be any help for me?

Thanks

Access for Work? You might get pip too but that is assessed on need, not income related.

There’s a mobility element to PIP but it isn’t easy to get and probably wouldn’t cover a cab every day. I get the lowest mobility element of DLA (still and praying they don’t PIP me) and it’s about £80 a month?

Try the DWP Access to Work scheme and see. .PIP is not means tested however the criteria for the mobility component is that you can walk less than 50 metres or have such anxiety that going out is overwhelming to get an award.

Thank you. I’ve never had to ask for help before. I don’t know anything about it. But if I have to get a cab or whatever it’s not worth me working. I have a DH who works and we could probably manage but I’d rather be working!

I’d tou can walk more than 50 yards (even if in pain or needing aids) and have the mental capacity to plan a journey then you are very very unlikely to get any amount of mobility element of PIP.

Could you manage with a mobility scooter? I know it would still not be near a loo but you would be sitting.

Katinski · 26/09/2019 07:52

I receive Mobility. It's not means tested. To back my claim I supplied a letter, in my case from the hospital, saying I was in danger of falls, submitted that, and started receiving it immediately.
It pays for my cleaner and cabs (since I had to give up my car).
Good luck, OP!
And to reiterate, no it's not means tested.

Dd gets about £80 a month from pip. It's helpful but to qualify you need to either struggle to walk 100m or struggle to plan journeys/take accompanied (this is her situation). If you have varying levels it can be harder but it is possible

I think this would be the most suitable thing for you to apply for (not means tested)
www.gov.uk/access-to-work/eligibility

You could also look into your PIP eligibility (not means tested):
www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/sick-or-disabled-people-and-carers/pip/before-claiming/check-you-are-eligible/
also see
www.pip-assessment.support/#main-menu
and www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/personal-independence-payment-pip/pip-self-test

It can be difficult to get PIP, I suggest you focus on whether you can do the activities reliably, safely, repeatedly and to a reasonable standard. And medical evidence is pretty much essential.

Citizens Advice can help with the form if you think you could get it and would like help to apply.
