Are coat hoods so dangerous?!

In a moment of frustration, when DC had come home with half their coat hood hanging off AGAIN, yesterday I sent feedback to a well known manufacturer of expensive children's clothing, asking why the coat hood was poppered on, when it was an absolute nightmare because it unpopped every time the child puts on their school bag. This meant the hood got lost on the floor at school and/or the child got wet.

The reply? Because otherwise the hood is a danger to children due to the strangling risk.

Ummmm...really? Is this a thing? This is a coat for children age up to 12 (years). If hoods are so inherently dangerous should I be fearing the hooded dressing gown?! Is a cagoule a secret death trap? Is this a thing anyone else has heard of, or is it the most ridiculous answer ever?

Have now sewn the hood onto the coat myself so the poppers are no more.

I'm the wrong person to respond to this as I have a traumatic memory of my little sister climbing a tree when we were little and slipping, catching her hood on a branch and turning blue. Thank god my dad (who I never saw move so fast either before or since) scaled that tree like a monkey and got her down.

Literally gives me the shivers just thinking about it tbh.

Kids also play tag and grab hoods strangling the poor child

One lost hood is worth a few saved lives

OK, fair enough. In that case maybe turn my question around - why is it considered safe for most coats to have fully attached hoods?

I totally see the danger in the tree climbing scenario (as with avoiding any loose or dangling clothing if climbing).

Because adults don’t play tag?

Odd though, none of my boys’ jackets have a poppered hood, nor any of their hoodies. One has a body warmer like that though.

Just sew it on if it bothers you.

DS had a coat with a zipped hood (I was trying to avoid poppers for the child that lost everything). His class then had a phase of yoinking at each others' hoods. Good job I'm handy with a needle and thread to repair a fair amount of damage.
