Advice on new career when 40+

My second child will start secondary school next year and I currently do a part-time school hours admin job (not in a school!). I enjoy the job but wonder if I should be doing something that stretches me a bit more and also earning more money, especially now my children are becoming more independent. I have a degree and used to have a professional job before children. I spent a number of years as a SAHM before getting this admin job, which has really been a great way to get back into working life.
I would consider going back to my former professional job but I can't just step back into it, it would be quite a long road before I could do it again. I also never particularly enjoyed it, so figured I might as well explore other options while I have the chance.

I've been working through a book about finding the right career for you and at the end of a long process of trying to analyse my character and skill set it boiled me down into 3 interests/knowledge areas and 4 skills.
The book then just advises I go and ask lots of people what jobs they can think of that would match. I thought I'd try mumsnet for this as there will no doubt be a broader range of people on here than people I know!

The 3 things I really love and/or have knowledge in are:
Books
Health/Medicines
Money/Finance

My 4 skills are:
Conveying warmth and empathy
Following through and completing a task
Communicating effectively
Planning

I've deliberately not mentioned anything about my degree subject or former job as I'd love you to just look at those things without any pre-conceptions. Although I'm sure that won't stop you guessing Grin

If anyone has any idea of jobs that might fit please do let me know - even if they seem a bit crazy!

Further useful info would that I would be happy to do some training but really want to work part time in the long term.

I await your marvellous ideas Grin

Teaching?

EatYourTeaNow · 25/09/2019 11:23

Good suggestion but I'm married to a teacher, and I don't think we could cope with two teachers in the house!

Have you looked into any return to work schemes? Lots of the big corporates run them for women in exactly your position

Rosere · 25/09/2019 12:10

Working with adults who have special needs. Or in a day centre for oldies? All those skills and interests are transferable. Something people facing anyway.

Not wanting to derail your thread, but I am in a similar position. Could I ask you for the name of the book please? TIA

EatYourTeaNow · 25/09/2019 12:22

The book is called 'What Color is your Parachute?' It's an American book, hence color not colour.

I'll definitely have a look at the Return to Work schemes. I thought they would all be for accountancy etc but perhaps they are not.

I'm going to have a think about the suggestions with an open mind. Thanks!

Thank you, will give it a look

I would suggest a junior governance or compliance role at a bank or financial institution. Your admin experience plus your interests could get you an interview with a big retail bank or consultancy through their return to work programmes.

Some of these ideas are interesting! The return to work schemes seem to mostly be in London, which is a shame as that sounded like a good idea.
