Would you ring in sick about this ?

On monday I was referred to the rapid assessment chest pain clinic by my gp.
I'd had on and off mild chest discomfort for a month or two, mainly on exertion and with stress. He predicted that I'd probably be seen within the next 7 to 10 days. He also requested that I come into the surgery and have an ecg plus bloods done. Had the ecg done yesterday and it was abnormal. The technician spoke to my gp about it and I was told the surgery couldn't do anything about it, just to wait for my appointment. I rang the nhs booking line to request an appointment only to discover there's a waiting list and it will probably be more like a 3 week wait - so much about rapid assessment Confused I'm now in a bit of a quandry. I have a physically active and emotionally stressful job plus 12 hour shifts and varying nights /days (ICU nurse). Do I ring in sick ? Do I get gp to see if he can hurry appointment on ?
Really not sure what to do....any advice would be helpful.

Are you in discomfort currently?

Discuss the situation with your line manager. As healthcare professionals I'm sure you can come to an agreement as to what is best to do.

As for hurrying your appointment along, you're in the same position as everyone else waiting. If your symptoms do escalate then you should go to A&E or see your GP again as appropriate.

With chest pains, no I wouldn't
Hope you get seen sooner rather than later Ruby

Thanks ! Will probably ring my manager but ultimately it's up to me to decide.
Gutted really - never smoked and longtime runner/ cyclist but family genetics

Can you be put on alternative duties that are less physical?

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2019 10:10

You need to speak to your manager.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2019 10:10

But look on the bright side. You work in ICU just in case anything did happen.

WorraLiberty · 25/09/2019 10:12

No I wouldn't because you're in a very similar situation to my colleague. She waited 5 weeks for her appointment and then it was cancelled. By the time she managed to get another one, nearly 7 weeks had passed and she's still waiting for results now.

All in all it's been nearly 3 months. She couldn't possibly have taken all that time off but she was put on lighter duties. Is that a possibility for you?

Tonnerre · 25/09/2019 10:21

Can you have a quick phone consultation with your GP to ask about this?

Floralnomad · 25/09/2019 10:24

Can’t you go in to work , have an episode of chest pain and get sent to A & E , that way you may get it all sorted quicker .

What is actually on your ECG? Abnormal can mean a lot of different thigs.

Ruby2065 · 25/09/2019 10:32

Left hemi block which is a change from last one a year ago. My concern is I've possibly had an mi.

I think I'll ring them just to see what they say. The ecg may expediate things .

Agree with that, but could also be a conduction issue.

Can you get someone at work to do another ECG and have a look at it?It can also be an ischaemic response (if it is the blood supply to the bundle of His)

If you had a normal ECG a year ago this does need investigating (I know you know that) and IMHO you should not be working until it has been checked.

I used to be a cardiac tech.

Thanks sashh. Well funnily enough ecg a year ago showed t wave depression in one lead (2nd) but because my symptoms weren't typical and I'd been on my spin bike a couple of days earlier they felt it wasn't significant ie not angina
Did have echo and treadmill test subsequently which proved normal also.
thanks anyway !
