Would you put suncream on this cat's nose and ears in the summer?

Cat advice please

No, because I live in the UK and we don’t get a summer. 😂😂😂

DementorsKiss · 24/09/2019 13:59

in my experience they just lick it off

Honeyroar · 24/09/2019 14:01

No. Have you had instances when he got sunburnt?

No. They find shade and are not daft like some of us.

Redshoesandtheblues · 24/09/2019 16:17

But, even if they are sun worshippers, unlikely to find anything suitable or that will stay unlicked.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/09/2019 16:18

Of course not.

thecatneuterer · 24/09/2019 16:22

OP. You are getting the wrong answers to this question as you have posted in the wrong topic. People who actually know about cats hang out in The Litter Tray.

Yes, you should put suncream on white ears and noses. The spray ones for children seem to work best. Our clinic sees very many cases of skin cancer on the noses and ears of white cats every year. Many prove fatal (if you can get the ears off quickly enough they stand a good chance though).

Ultimately though it will depend on your cat. Some will tolerate being squirted or creamed and some won't, but it's certainly worth trying.

KittiesInsane · 24/09/2019 16:28

We have one of the ‘should be creamed, would rather die’ type of cats, TheCatNeuterer. How on earth do you actually get any on a furiously squirming cat’s ears?

ScreamingValenta · 24/09/2019 16:28

Yes, you should - maybe ask MNHQ to move thread to the litter tray for recommendations/tips, OP.

Kenworthington · 24/09/2019 16:32

Yes you should. My friends white cat is a total sun worshipper and has just had to have both his ears amputated due to skin cancer. His nose isn’t looking great either. Poor thing

thecatneuterer · 24/09/2019 16:38

@KittiesInsane If I had the answer to that I'd be some sort of deity. I also have a white cat like that. It gets to the stage where he only has to see me coming towards him and he bolts so I've given up.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 24/09/2019 16:47

Agree with thecatneuterer 100%...skin cancer is a legitimate risk for some cats, so protection is vital.

Aniwell Filtaclear worked ok on my white cat's ears/nose.
www.aniwell-uk.com/filtaclear

I say 'ok' as she wasn't thrilled by its daily application (rescue cat with difficult history), but vet insisted so I persevered.

It contains Bitrex to deter them from licking it off.
You should be fine if done gently before playing, plus rewards bribery given Wink

Potentially, you're saving her from future pain and suffering.
Good for you.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 24/09/2019 16:52

BTW, to actually get it on her, I used to wrap her in a towel, just head exposed.

She struggled a bit, but then resigned herself to it in the end.
Dreamies helped.

Redshoesandtheblues · 24/09/2019 17:10

Goes to show you should never give up!
I tried with my cats in a very hot summer and it was mayhem. But they found shade.

I was also worried about poisoning them or the dog. I asked vets advice. He told me not to worry. Hmm

KindergartenKop · 24/09/2019 17:50

She's new to us and not even allowed outside yet, I was just musing on her pink nosey and the thought occurred to me. She probably wouldn't let me do it but by next summer she might like me more!

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 24/09/2019 18:22

The people we bought our old house from had a cat with white ears. Both ears had to be partially amputated due to cancer. Definitely worth trying to do something.

SamBeckett · 24/09/2019 18:26

My dog had a pink nose we has to put sun cream on him it was easy to apply but hard to stop him from licking it off so we kept him in during the sunnyist parts of the day, but I accept that it's not so easy to do that with a cat.

SamBeckett · 24/09/2019 18:31

OP you could spend the winter time getting her accustomed to you touching her nose and getting a reward then when she is ok ith you doing that introduce which ever sun cream your vet recommends.
If you do it a couple of times a week by summer next year it will be a doddle.

Funghi · 24/09/2019 18:32

Yep, on his nose and ears. Same for the dogs.

You can buy natural stuff from lush or Holland and B. Obviously it doesn’t mean it’s edible but I prefer it in case they do get at it.

dappledsunshine · 24/09/2019 18:38

I don't know op as I have a tabby but he is adorable!

Cockw0mble · 24/09/2019 18:42

Practice doing a 'purrito' now, and feeding treats while she's wrapped up, to create a bit of a positive association. Over time you can start introducing the suncream, again feeding treats to keep it a nice, happy experience.

I have a friend with a cat who needs his ears cleared daily, and that's how she got him to do it calmly/happily

sueelleker · 25/09/2019 08:51

I like 'purrito'!

KittiesInsane · 25/09/2019 09:48

Our damn cat doesn't eat treats, so she's hard to bribe. Doesn't like Dreamies, doesn't like tuna, doesn't like chicken, doesn't eat the mice she catches ('Ewww, slimy and furry! Yeuchhh!').

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2019 10:14

Yes. If you have a cat with white ears, you have too. They are at high risk of skin cancer. We had a white cat who would get sunburnt if we didn't. We used a kids purple stick on him as he couldn't get it off. He was not impressed!

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2019 10:15

And come and join us mad cat people on the litter tray!
