Is this amount of food normal? Where is it all going?

DS is 22 months. He weighs around 20lb. He is in 9-12 clothes. 6-9 month vests.

He's tiny. But it's a gigantic amount of food. An example -

5, yes 5, brioche rolls. A banana. A yogurt. A handful of strawberries.

Spaghetti B for lunch, a child's portion but a bigger child. I'd expect a 9 year old to be satisfied with it. He isn't - He will then have seconds and polish the lot off. I wouldn't offer the seconds but he looks around frantically and moans if others are still eating.

His nursery have reported having to always give a second helping since he's very quick and takes other children's food who are sat there looking into space! We ran into trouble a few weeks back because he quickly snatched and gulped down a sausage (meat). He's veggie.

For dinner he'd have something lighter, a sandwich with some crisps. A piece of fruit. A slice of cheese. But recently I've just been giving him a portion of my food since he isn't satisfied with something light after a heavy nursery 'tea'.

Other foods for breakfast include two scrambled eggs on toast, nursery often say he has a slice of marmalade toast to keep him satisfied.

Lots of fruit, lots of cheese. He likes anything and everything.

Last night he ate, yes he ate the whole thing, a plate of nacho cheese with jalapeños on top! Didn't bat an eyelid at the spice. Even dipped the nacho in the salsa Blush

He will eat sushi. He will eat a roast (his favourite). He will eat and eat and eat and I don't think he

I kit don't know where all of this is going. I know some children 'burn things off' easily but his seems so extreme. I would be overeating if I consumed what he does.

I just had to post to say what a sweet little chap he is. And agree a visit to the doctor. Maybe you just have another jockey on your hands but it’s worth checking.

@Passthecherrycoke
Oh for the love of god can someone explain how protein is going to make him gain weight?!

The protein comments aren't about making him gain weight - in the OP it sounded more like the concern was the volume of food, she didn't mention that he needed to lose weight.
Obviously protein keeps you fuller for longer than carbs do.

@walkintheparc the whole thread is about his Low weight. Obviously he doesn’t need to lose weight. He needs to gain it

Omg there are plenty of overweight vegetarians people. Carbs have calories, so if he's eating so much he should still gain weight.

The sausage incident is indicative of proximity not a deep understanding of his diet

Don't let the Mumsnet panic stations worry you too much OP. Some of the people saying that's the weight of their three month old Shock !!! He's gorgeous but defo worth taking him to the GP and push for referral. Could be nothing. Best of luck. Keep us updated.

DD has always been small for her age and at just turned 2 was still wearing 9-12m in a lot of things (and some 12-18) so I'm not AS alarmed by that as others. In between 24-28m DD has had a big growth spurt and gone up a percentile line and gone up to 18-24m clothes so they can suddenly have growth spurts.

The thing that jumped out at me in the things you mentioned your DS eating is the salt content. A lot of meat replacements are loaded with salt, as are brioche, nachos, tinned beans. All are fine in small amounts but the amount you are letting him eat at once sounds massive. The salt in the plate of nachos would take him well over the daily recommendation for 2 year olds and having large amounts of salt can have knock on effects on kidneys etc. so if he's having meat replacements on the same day as nachos I think it's worth totting up the amount of salt going in.

Doje · 24/09/2019 21:53

Doje How long does the growth spurt take though? It's been going on for 3/4 months

It's been different with both boys DS1 it was a month or two. DS2's has been going on for about 6 months now. 😆Grin

“ Some of the people saying that's the weight of their three month old shock”

I said it’s almost the weight of my 3 month old. It is. And she’s a perfectly normal weight for her age

as a pp said, it is the lack of height growth which is always the red flag when it comes ot kids and size.
I know my friend's dd was very very thin due to medical issues (absorption of food), but they didn't really intervene until she stopped growing up.
