If your DC liked the 13 Storey Treehouse books...

What else do they read? I have a reluctant reader of fiction on my hands. He reads a lot of fact books but I find it hard to get him interested in fiction.

He has, however, devoured the treehouse series, and is now rereading them for the third time! So any other similarly silly recommendations would be great. We've tried Tom Gates which he did read, but he wasn't that fussed. He likes Harry Potter, but I'm reading them to him as I don't think he'd manage the language and themes on his own.

He's 8 by the way. Not a super advanced reader but pretty competent I think.

Hi,
I have a son of similar age and he likes the Timmy Failure books. He likes David Baddiel's books such as The Parent Agency. He also likes the How to Train Your Dragon series; they are very funny. Has he read Dog Man? They're more comic in style than anything but good fun.

Stink Bomb and Ketchup Face series by John Dougherty.

DeathMetalMum · 24/09/2019 10:27

Yes dd1 8 likes dog man, diary of a wimpy kid. Actual comic books. Dd2 6 likes Roald Dahl particularly Charlie and the chocolate factory, the witches and Matilda.

David Walliams

Thanks for some good ideas already. DD(9) likes Diary of a wimpy kid, the beano and King Flashypants. She wouldn't like anything too serious. At the library, I look out for books that have a good balence of text / funny illustrations.

Try Horrible Science/Histories, I know they are fact based but that's no bad thing :)

DS1 likes Timmy Failure, Harry Potter, Stink. He also liked The Hunred Mile an Hour Dog.

BertieBotts · 24/09/2019 11:20

Oh yes and Roald Dahl

YY to Roald Dahl and David Walliams

The Bear Grylls Adventures series for kids, currently £12 for 10 books from the Book People Bear Grylls Adventure Books

Or the Bear Grylls Mission Survival series. The factual element might appeal to your DS.

Dog man, Captain Underpants, Mr Penguin and the lost treasure are the favourites at the moment.

confusedofengland · 24/09/2019 14:38

How about Famous Five & Secret Seven books?

PatriciaHolm · 24/09/2019 14:59

Fortunately, the milk by Neil Gaiman

SummerLightning · 24/09/2019 15:02

Bad guys, dog man, captain underpants, wimpy kid, Barry loser, the Beano and the Phoenix. Garfield and asterix

Thank you everyone. Some great ideas here. I'm off to the library tomorrow, armed with a list.

He does like Enid Blyton, but again more for me to read to him. It's finding fiction books he will willingly pick up and read himself that is proving tricky.

I do refuse to read him the Treehouse ones though, as I don't think they're made to be read aloud. Too many speech bubbles and cartoons. So maybe I need to refuse a bit more!

Who Let the Gods Out - DS liked that series after 13STH. He also likes the Itch trilogy.

Saucery · 24/09/2019 17:35

Pamela Butchart’s books are really funny, playing often on how children get the wrong end of the stick when they overhear adults talking. Then just get carried away with the intrigue!
In the same vein, Kita Mitchell’s Grandma Dangerous trilogy is hilarious, like a more amusing, less spiteful David Walliams.

GhostsToMonsoon · 24/09/2019 17:54

My son is 8 and hasn't read the Treehouse books yet. He loved Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Stick Dog, the Dog Man and Captain Underpants books and David Walliams.

He also liked the George and the Big Bang Series by Lucy and Stephen Hawking.

I keep trying to get him to read my old childhood favourites but he says most of them are boring.
