Baby advice re. Sick and laying on back

Sooo my 4.5 week old is a bit of a spewer and basically I try to keep him upright after a feed for as log as possible.
But tonight he has been a bit of a dream in that he has been sleeping in his cot and not on me! Anyhoo just fed him at 2.30 to 2.45 and he basically fell straight back to sleep. I had to change his nappy and he pretty much slept through that too. I had his upper body propped on a pillow to keep him as upright as possible so he wasn't sick. Now I'm back in bed with my legs at an angle and him laying on them so he is asleep but propped up still.
I want to put him back in his cot bit have I left it long enough?! I just think as soon as I put him down he will spit up his last feed but I'm so tired I need to get him off my legs.

Argh help

I used to lay DD on her side as she used to throw up a lot. I would put a rolled up towel behind her to stop her rolling onto her back, I would alternate sides with each feed.

Ah ok he does like to sleep on his side sometimes actually and I have used rolled up blankets behind him before so will do that tongiht. I think it would be really good if I could put him to sleep with the pillow but I know that's not a good idea.

Don't use a pillow. Ig you felt you wanted to raise the cot head a little you could put something under the top legs. I used to do this with mine if they had a cold, it means their heads are raised slightly, but no danger from a pillow.

See we have the next2me cot which does tilt but it makes zero difference for some reason. He really needs propped up quite a lot.
But! I've put him down and so far seems ok..fingers crossed!!

Get some sleep while you can. Goodnight

I was told by a paediatrician when DS was young that apart from the mess it really doesn’t matter if a baby is sick whilst on their back - they can really project, and apparently this is a reflex designed to prevent choking that really throws the vomit out and forward. We lose it as we get older, which is why adults can choke on vomit but little children don’t?

Hadalifeonce · 24/09/2019 03:43

Didn't know that, and no one ever said anything when I told them how DD slept. Made me feel better though.

Horehound · 24/09/2019 09:24

@FenellaMaxwell I didn't know that either, thanks.
My granny was saying back in the day they were told to put babies on their fronts so if they were sick it would just slip out! Then a few years ago She put my cousin on her tummy whilst the midwife was doing a home visit and the midwife said she'd have to note it in the book because babies should always sleep on heir backs..my granny said she raised 4 children and all slept on their front.
It's funny how advice can completely change.
My boy definitely likes sleeping on his front and side.
No sick during night. Got a cleavage full this morning though...charming Grin
