Doctors - do you get the flu jab?

And if not, why not? I spoke to a nurse who said she never gets it. She was a bit vague, mentioning the ingredients as a reason. I was a bit surprised and wondered if that is typical..?

I’m a nurse and always have it

littlemissalwaystired · 23/09/2019 18:30

Not a doctor, but I'm a midwife and always get it.

AnnaMariaDreams · 23/09/2019 18:31

I think most do get it (the ones who don’t it’s usually down to just being stupidly busy and overworked and not able to get to the clinic days). I’m not a clinician but I do work in a research capacity in the NHS with patient contact.

I always get one, but I have asthma so I always get one anyway. It’s not to do with work.

Bigbopboo · 23/09/2019 18:37

Yes. Will do anything for a free mince pie at work.

My DD and her partner (we live together) haven't had the flue jab up.untill.now.

I always do (copd, asthma and part of one lung). Last year DD got flue, I got a chest infection DDs partner got infected sinisesr. All over xmas.

Believe me. DD.has vowed to pay for flue jabs this year

I'm quite happy to drag her kicking and screaming to BOots to get that jab

Neverhadakiss · 23/09/2019 18:47

Reassuring to hear your replies! I always get mine. I hadn’t heard anything about dodgy ingredients (apart from anti vaxxers)

onlyfortonight · 23/09/2019 18:48

Always get mine...usually first in the queue!

sazzle27 · 23/09/2019 19:14

Some people won't if they're allergic to eggs as that is part of the ingredients.. or vegan I would imagine too..

I do as they're offered at work and we often get stuck in confined spaces with people coughing and hacking all over us (Paramedic)

MrsSiba · 23/09/2019 20:07

Schools are sending our consent forms for flu jabs at the moment. They specifically referred to the jabs not having any gelatine so it wouldn't put off vegetarians/Muslims/Jews.

Sammysquiz · 23/09/2019 20:09

My DH is a doctor and always has one. He’s an Intensive Care Consultant so sees first-hand people dying of the flu Sad

LunaTheCat · 23/09/2019 20:12

Yep, GP here and I always have it. Not had flu yet.

AforEffort9 · 23/09/2019 20:15

Doctor. Always! I don't know why you wouldn't when we see the damage that flu can do and we are surrounded all day by unwell people.

BuildBuildings · 23/09/2019 20:15

I've had mine 2 year in a row. Got mine today. I'm not a medical professional. But both GPs who did mine had theirs.

dottyp0104 · 23/09/2019 20:19

Nurse- had it once when pregnant and never had it since. Personal choice. My husband and child have it.

safeforall · 23/09/2019 20:21

Nurse - I have mine every year.

KitKat1985 · 23/09/2019 20:27

I have it usually. But, the problem with the flu virus is that it can mutate so quickly, so some people don't bother having it because it's made specifically for that flu strain currently doing the rounds, but if that flu strain mutates again then the jab becomes essentially worthless. So it's quite different to say the meningitis or MMR jabs.

KitKat1985 · 23/09/2019 20:27

Sorry, should say I'm a nurse.

Neverhadakiss · 23/09/2019 20:27

@dottyp0104 can I ask a genuine question, what are your reasons for not getting it?

OP posts:
NoDontLookAtMeImShy · 23/09/2019 20:28

I was on placement on a medical ward last winter and they were doing the rounds asking people to get the flu jab. All the nurses got it and only about half the doctors.....

NoDontLookAtMeImShy · 23/09/2019 20:29

Their reasons were that it made them feel like shit so and they haven't got time to be ill

violetandrose · 23/09/2019 20:30

My relative is a nurse and she won't have it because she was so ill after having it as a student.

Tableclothing · 23/09/2019 20:30

I'm NHS. I always get it. My workplace had a 70% takeup last year. There's some who get it elsewhere, some who have medical reasons not to, some who think it makes them feel rough for a couple of days, and a couple of conspiracy theorists.

dottyp0104 · 23/09/2019 20:34

@Neverhadakiss just what Kitkat says. Only protects agains some strains (the ones predicted) so still a chance of getting flu. And it made me feel awful when had it so never bothered after.
Quite happy to vaccinate others who wish it though

Neverhadakiss · 23/09/2019 20:40

@dottyp0104 thanks, that makes sense.
