New/expensive mattress and my back in agony - can I do anything?

Obviously I can't return it, we've slept on it for a week and it's from an independent bed shop so no 60 day return policy or anything like that.

I broke my back years ago and until we got an amazing memory foam mattress a decade ago had back issues. That mattress sorted my back out but dh moaned about it, was too firm for him.

So my back has been ok for ten years. We needed a new mattress dh said no way to a memory foam or anything too firm. We got a mid firmness pillowtop mattress. I lay on it in the shop for ages and it seemed comfy and supportive.

A week later and I'm in agony . I woke up last night as my back was hurting so much. I think it's too soft for me and my back is sagging. Is there any sort of topper which could make the mattress firmer? Do memory foam toppers help?

Or I will spend the next ten years sleeping on the floor.

I have a dodgy back too, years of surgery... I hated my new mattress for three weeks and then it was fine and I've loved it ever since. I have the rare bad night but I'd have that anywhere.

You can get mattress toppers but you might find it just gets better as it settles, mine really did.

Thanks. That's a good point, maybe my muscles just need to readjust or something. Will try a few more weeks then before buying topper, etc.

I don’t like a soft memory foam mattress. Find them hot and sticky
Give me one that’s like a board andim happy
I also get regular osteopath treatment and my spine is pretty good

Can you get a board just half the width of the bed and put it under your side of the mattress?

SleepyKat · 23/09/2019 10:54

Board is a good idea, my mum used to do this for her bad back, will get dh to do that for me.

With hindsight you should have gone for two singles, one firm doe you and one softer for him, providing your bed frame is big enough.

Could you put the mattress you’ve bought on a spare room bed and get two singles to suit for your main bed?

Or alternatively buy a firm mattress for the spare bed and have kisses and cuddles in your main bed but then go and sleep in the spare bed?

This was me about a year ago. Bought a brand new divan, mattress and headboard. Spent way more than we planned to on it all.

It was way, way too firm for me. After four nights, I was in tears as I was in so much pain. Not like me at all. Then we spent ages basically walking all over it, turned it over etc, to sort of break it in.

I have been fine with it since.

I know that you have the opposite problem as yours is too soft for you, but sometimes it takes a while to adjust, especially as you had your previous mattress for 10 years. I would say to see where you are in a week's time and reassess.

Don't have a spare room/bed to put it on and I could do without the expense of another new mattress. It might come to that though.
