Has anyone done the Coronation Street tour or live near it?

Not my bag but DM loves it and I'm thinking about booking it for her big birthday in November and wondered if it's any good?

Also - neither of us drive so option 1 would be to get the train / coach from Newcastle and stay in a hotel if anyone has recommendations please?

Option 2 is to drive down with Dad, my DP and ds and stay in a lodge / house and make a weekend of it. Again - any recommendations would be really welcome!

Or is it shite and I need to rethink?! 😂

If your Mum loves Corrie, she’ll like it! Def. it worth it if you don’t ever watch the TV programme. Lots for the fellas to do in Manchester whilst you do it. Football museum, Imperial war Museum, Peoples Musurm etc.

It's at Media City isn't it? There are good tram links, and there is actually a hotel on the site.

But you could easily stay in Manchester and get the tram in, which means you could do other things in the centre on the other day you're there.

If you're driving down to make a weekend of it, you could also stay in Cheshire if a walk/stately home sort of visit (and a break from being in a city) would be nice.

Not sure where it is (address says Salford- I've never even been to Manchester!)

I think it might be 2 trains from Newcastle- I'll check!

It's quite near the Trafford centre. Premier inn at media city. I'd make a weekend of it Manchester is a great city.

I think she'd love it

SandlakeRd · 22/09/2019 12:57

I did similar with my mum. We stayed in Manchester and there was a direct bus to media city in Salford. There is a tram stop too. It is in Media City and very easy to find when you get there.

As others have said there is it other stuff to do there including an outlet mall.

It was good fun even though I am not a Corrie fan!

PlaymobilPirate · 23/09/2019 10:17

It sounds like she'll love it! Looking into hotels and travel this week!

Don't stay in the Sadha's hotel. There's loads to do in Manchester.

KnobOfStork · 23/09/2019 10:51

It's right near the Imperial War Museum which is amazing and worth a visit too. The Lowry outlet I wouldn't bother with unless you love M&S, pans and suitcases. Can't comment on the quality of the tour as I only did the old one many years ago as a child. But a weekend in Manchester is always good and there's plenty of gorgeous countryside reachable by car or train if that's your bag. I would stay in Manchester rather than at Media City.

We did the tour twice, once last Summer and again this year and really enjoyed it. We stayed at the Premier Inn at Media City, which is just across the water from the set. You could actually see the rooftops of the set from our room!

The online reviews for the tour are mixed. Most of the reviews are critical of the price. It's not cheap at £35 a ticket. Plus there's an extra charge if you want a professional photo taken outside The Rovers. They didn't seem to be charging for this when we went last year but they were this year. Then there's the fact that many people were under the impression that they would get to see the interior sets. I don't know where this idea has come from as it's advertised as a tour of the exterior sets only!

The first time we went was early on a Sunday morning and we were in a group of about 16, which was a really nice size as we weren't all scrambling for photos of the same thing at the same time. However, the second time, we went Saturday lunchtime and our group was much larger, about 40 people. There's also groups in front and behind you so it did feel a bit rushed at times. Groups can have up to 50 people in them and tours run every 15 minutes.

It's far more organised that I've heard the tour at the old Quay Street studios was. At that one, I believe that you could wander round at your own pace, whereas with the current tour, you stick with your guide the whole way round.

Oh, and as it's an exterior tour, make sure you pack your waterproofs!

PlaymobilPirate · 23/09/2019 11:45

Oh no, I didn't realise it was only the outside of the buildings you get to see Confused

The original tours were not even on the the actual street, they built a replica in the 1980s.I think the current one is the actual set used for filming.

SandlakeRd · 24/09/2019 07:17

It is the one used for filming but it is mainly exterior. I found it quite interesting about how the whole filming process worked in that respect!

There are a couple of interiors you can see as they have built the sets that way. The police station, florist and kebab shop from memory.

Hi there we did the coronation Street tour this Saturday and it is at media city in salford.and we thought it was a waste of money and as we had been to the old set on a tour we were looking forward to it as the previous one was very good.i also purchased this for a birthday present.spend your money ok n something else for there birthday.

PlaymobilPirate · 25/09/2019 21:48

One of the negative reviews would have been mine. We weren’t planning on doing it but had gone up to do the CBBC tour with DS (which was amazing) and saw that they were doing Corrie tours as well so booked on for that afternoon. The tour lasted half of the advertised time and I complained when we got back, the manager told me it included the time we had to wait to get our photo at the end. Naturally I told him that that was unacceptable and that I wasn’t prepared to pay to stand in a queue for 30 minutes and got a refund.

I think there are coach trips there. Try national express
