Has anyone here managed to overcome severe psychosomatic pain?

I have horrendous left-side pain. From my mid-back, the left lower quarter & my left leg are often locked in severe pain. It feels like this area is 'foreign' to me. Like it doesn't belong. And the pain is terrible. Ordinary over the counter painkillers don't touch it. I had an MRI but they found nothing amiss. I did a years worth of physiotherapy but that made no difference either. Right now I have nothing bad going on in my life. I'm single, free & happy - apart from this terrible pain.

Is it definitely psychosomatic - has neural pain been ruled out?

Burningcheeks · 22/09/2019 12:01

I don't know how they test for neural pain? But after the mri I was told it's psychosomatic because I'm in perfect health & they basically signed me off saying nothing more they could do...

Have you tried using a Tens machine?

You've been fobbed off. Ask for a referral to a neurologist. They can diagnose if it is and help with coping with pain.

Might you have fibromyalgia? It's not vry well understood... perhaps you could go back and ask about it and get linked in with support groups for it who might have some idea about how to deal with it and what treatments might help. Flowers

Psychosomatic just means "we don't know what's wrong" and is often a way of dismissing patients who stand up for themselves. A lot of people with fibromyalgia, ME and other conditions are told this stuff for years until they finally manage to find a doctor who takes them seriously.

I have similar and in my case it's actually sciatica caused by my left piriformis muscle becoming inflamed.

A visit to a physio would be your best bet.

iklboo · 22/09/2019 14:27

The OP did a year of physio that didn't help though.

They shouldn’t diagnose psychosomatic until they have ruled out everything - including vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune and neurological conditions.
