London dwellers, what's your favourite laid-back + amazing food restaurant?

Going for a weekend in a few months. DP and I are wannabe foodies (minus the London budget!) and want to go somewhere really nice.

Last trip we went to Dishoom (really enjoyed it) and Soho House at BBC Television centre (underwhelming food and £££).

Criteria are:

  • Unpretentious/casual style
  • Not too £££ but happy to pay for really good food.
  • Fairly flexible about cuisine but probably not Indian again.

We're staying in Notting Hill. Happy to tube it for somewhere amazing.

Barrafina is very informal but still feels special, you will sit next to each other facing the chefs & likely have a queue behind you but you don't feel rushed.
I love the Ivy, has a good buzz & the food is good & filing for the price.

Kettners Townhouse restaurant in Soho and Brasserie Zedel in Piccadilly Circus are two places which might fit the bill and aren't £££

Duck and Rice on Berwick Street is great for dim sum and Chinese food with a twist. Also I know you said not street food, but pleasant lady Jian Bing on Greek Street in Soho is fab for a snack. Xing Tu Fang on Frith Street is also making the best brown sugar bubble tea and totally worth popping into.

I really like Shampers near Oxford Circus. The wine list is amazing and there's always a really good atmosphere!

To echo pp - honey and co! One of my all-time favourite restaurants. Great for breakfast/brunch as well as lunch/dinner

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 23/09/2019 17:05

Does anyone know a great place for a traditional Sunday roast? Sorry to hijack but I'll be in London later this year and I really miss Sunday lunches (yes, I can make my own here in the US but it's lovely to go out for one)!

lurker101 · 23/09/2019 17:36

@AmICrazyorwhat2 Sunday Roasts - Berners Tavern in Central London would be my choice in central. Otherwise there are some fab spots in West London - Chiswick and Richmond are great for casual Sunday roast and a Wander round the shops or Richmond Park. I would recommend The Crown Chiswick, thecrownchiswick.co.uk/
The Bell and Crown on the Thames www.bell-and-crown.co.uk/?utm_source=googlemybusiness&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=yext&utm_content=P010
Or either the Lass O Richmond Hill or The Greyhound for great roasts in Richmond

Oh man go to hawksmoor for their Sunday lunch! It’s the best value in the world and the food is Star Star Star

Barafina is my happy place. We go every year for my birthday and watch the world go by with copious amounts of red wine.

jay55 · 23/09/2019 17:52

Hawksmoor or paternoster chop house (the first dates restaurant) for Sunday lunch.

Davros · 23/09/2019 17:53

I'm amazed at how many people recommend Honey & Co. it must have changed since we went there - poky, uncomfortable, overpriced, pretentious!!
We like the Delaunay, Iberica Marylebone, DeMartino in Great Portland Street, Relais de Venise various locations, Roux at the Landau erm......

YesThisIsMe · 23/09/2019 17:56

I love Naughty Piglets in Brixton.
And St John, which I think nobody has suggested because it’s so obvious.

Muddlingalongalone · 23/09/2019 18:00

If you are big meat eaters then would highly recommend Blacklock. There are 2 or 3, I've been to the one at piccadilly/soho and it's fabulous. If you have the huge set menu it's v cheap too - only about £20 ph.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 23/09/2019 21:05

Hawksmoor is glam and very good food without being too spendy.

soggypizza · 23/09/2019 21:09

Dh rates the Seven Dials Hawksmoor above the others.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 23/09/2019 21:15

I like the Borough Market one.

Theworldisfullofgs · 23/09/2019 21:17

Pollen street social, definitely an even place. Love it.

Cafe Murano, not the one in Covent garden, the other one.

Trullo at Highbury Corner. Or Moro in Exmouth Market — very obvious, but no one’s said it yet.

For something mildly glammer, but buzzy and not stuffy, Bocca di Lupo in SoHo.

SalmonScale · 23/09/2019 23:02

DH and I love Scullys in St James. He ran Nopi with Ottolengi and now owns this gorgeous place. Perfectly casual too.

saraclara · 23/09/2019 23:07

Baltic on Blackfriars Road, for wonderful Eastern/Central European food.

Get there early to enjoy the cool bar, interesting cocktails, and a gazillion different vodkas!.
