Dd11 is behind in maths, do I get a tutor now or wait?

Dd has just gone into year 7. She didn’t do very well in her Sats maths exam. She’s absolutely fine in all her other classes except maths. She scored 15 out of 50 test recently. Obviously she has only been in year 7 for a few weeks and the teacher seems very encouraging with her. She’s in the bottom class.

I fear that she won’t be able to catch up, especially for her GCSEs.

Do I wait a year or so and see if the teacher can help her catch up slightly? She’s going to go to before school clubs and after school clubs.
Or do I find a tutor now?

I would go for Kumon ( or similar) at 11 rather than a tutor.
She needs to get the basics under her belt and practice practice practice which Kumon is great for.

Now. I personally would have booked a tutor before her SATs - it’s vital that she catches up on the work she doesn’t understand otherwise she’ll just get further and further behind

Kumon might be demoralising if she’s not at the level as the rest of her class

Definitely now. It becomes so much harder to catch up later.

Don’t wait.

As a yr 6 teacher I would say the sooner the better. If she really struggled in the SATs she probably needs to revisit aspects of the primary curriculum to give her a chance later on.

Now
A tutor will give her the best chance in helping her master it. I would'nt wait. It will have an affect on her confidence if she falls further behind.

I would second Kumon, they get started at a level that’s appropriate for them. My son entered secondary school predicted C/D in maths, he ended up with an A. He did Kumon every day for three years and it really helped

I would go now, because even worse than a lack of fundamental knowledge, is a loss of confidence.

Thanks all!!

Good luck to your daughter - it's great that you're behind her, giving her the tools and support she needs to succeed!

Another advocate of Kumon. Helped my daughter no end, even though they went back to basics which she thought was ‘boring’ but it was what she needed.
