Hi, could do with advice please ... dtr currently completing ucas form. Has cfs/m.e. - not really sure how much or how little to include in the section headed ‘what help do I need’.
Suggestions from anyone who has been through this process would be appreciated. Thanks

It’s a long time since I applied and I don’t have the same diagnosis. I think the point of the box is to flag any must have needs - I know someone who was refused a place on a course because the uni held most of the lectures in a building that couldn’t be adapted (the uni offered her an alternative and UCAS said she could apply to an extra uni)

From memory I think I put my diagnosis, that I use a wheelchair and would require help to get around campus and struggle to write by hand. I don’t think we went into the nitty gritty of using a computer for exams, extra time etc on my UCAS form

What PP said.

However, beyond the UCAS form, really look closely at what support each university offers. They will all talk the talk but differ widely in what is available on the ground. Make sure you visit in person and talk to a disability services adviser when you do.

As long as she ticks the dsa box on Student Finance application there will be an opportunity for a needs assessment later . However it might be useful to flag up any current adjustments such as extra time/rest breaks for exams or if minimal stairs, ensuite room, on campus accommodation might help.

I don’t know how much help I can be , my daughter has chronic pain and an under active thyroid , she can’t remember what she put on her form about 3 years ago but thinks that she probably mentioned what her conditions were briefly having also talked to staff at the uni open days .
It depends if placements are involved , my daughter is in Guildford studying dietetics so she got help from the assisted learning services who gave her a better desk chair and helped with the cost of a lightweight laptop .she also requested ground floor accommodation in her first year .
I think you need to be pretty open to telling uni staff what your needs are and get access to as much support as possible , open days give you the chance to meet the staff involved in this and once you’ve chosen unis then a dialogue from her to them will ensure that help is ready when she gets to uni
