They don’t want me, do they?

I applied for a job a few weeks back. I’m currently working in a very limited capacity in a much lower grade for the same company (part-time/shop floor type job).

I accepted my current job as they reached out and offered it to me, but I am massively over-qualified for it. The job I’ve now applied for is as part of the management team. I’m outside the U.K., so it might be difficult due to language. I’m reasonably fluent in the local language, but a small part of the job is working with customers, so I might need some assistance there to begin with.

Other than that, it’s the type of job I could easily have tackled in the U.K. My qualifications aren’t an exact fit, but close enough that I was excited.

I got a letter a couple of days back saying “Thanks for the application, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the process may take some time.”

I assumed at first that perhaps the current incumbent had decided they might not quit, but now I see they’ve extended the deadline by a month.

I’m assuming this means they don’t see me as suitable, but nobody else more suitable applied. Is there any other spin on this? I’m feeling depressed as I really need a full time job and they are also unwilling to increase my hours in my current role.

If tey are still advertizing, maybe they didn't get enough applications. Or the person who has the final say is on holiday/off sick/otherwise unavailible. I'd wait and carry on looking elsewhere in the meantime.

That is not a no so think positive! It could be a lack of funding, a recruitment freeze or a Pre-Brexit wobble! They have taken the time to contact you and tell you they are delayed so I would take that as a sign of interest.

ElizaPancakes · 20/09/2019 08:21

I don’t know why you think that? They would have just sent a ‘thanks but no thanks’ letter if they definitely didn’t want you.

If anything it's probably the other way round and there's a recruitment freeze but they don't want you to think you haven't go it.

I think they may not have received a wide enough field to appoint or the role may have changed very slightly. I wouldn’t see this as rejection.
If I wanted the job badly enough, I’d be using the additional month to work really hard on my language skills.

Thanks for the more positive spin. Pretty sure it’s nothing to do with Brexit as I’m not in the EU.

I’ve just been to the gym and am feeling more positive. Printed out my CV and will drop it off at a couple of other likely places. So many jobs here go by word of mouth that it’s easy to miss them. It’s really hard for incomers to get jobs.

Also now trying to work out how to improve my language skills. Good idea, but I need both technical language and advanced grammar. Guess I might benefit from reading technical magazines.

Thanks again.
