Pillow for aging sore neck?

Flurgle · 20/09/2019 07:17

I have intermittent neck pain which might be part stress but is probably arthritis too.
I have tried many pillows but none quite right yet.
Menopausal so I get hot as well.
Sleep on my side mostly now I’m not allowed to sleep on my stomach!
Help? Willing to pay out if it will help.

DH has a memory foam pillow, it’s not for me but he loves it. I would consider seeing an osteopath plus those aches will hopefully calm down once menopause is over. I spent a couple of years having really achy joints and it now seems to have passed.

I have a contoured memory foam pillow which I originally bought to help with a frozen shoulder originally. It is quite hard so I use a thin feather pillow over the top, but find it good for neck support.

I've got a Tempur memory foam, it was ridiculously expensive but it's very good. You need to go into a furniture store and try a few out before you buy

from what I've read, too many pillows or large deep ones are not good for your neck and back.

if you sleep on your stomach then no pillow should be used.

at other times one flatish pillow would be best.

it can take a bit of getting use to, but I found I wake up so much better now, without aches and pains in my back and neck.

This is true. When I got neck pain it was because of sleeping on two pillows.

I now have a Dunlopillo which I love, but they're not cheap and of course might not suit you. It's firm but not hard. I hate a pillow that my head sinks into.

hazeyjane · 20/09/2019 10:13

I have an Ikea contoured neck pillow and a small memory foam knee pillow - my sleep and back/neck pain has improved massively since getting them.

wowfudge · 20/09/2019 10:16

I'm picking up a three way memory foam pillow from M&S today. Hopefully it will work for me as I'm waking up with migraines from a sore neck frequently. Pricey but a lot cheaper than the Tempur one.

Flurgle · 20/09/2019 18:17

The M and S one sounds good.
I have a Dunlopillo. It’s ok but not as good as I expected.
Might look at Tempur then.

Tempura bed and pillows here. Heaven on earth. Ruins you for other beds though.

I would second the Osteopath.
A Tens machine can be fantastic for neck pain. We swear by ours in this house.
Gets rid of the worst headache in 10 minutes.
Brilliant for back and neck pain.
A fantastic buy 10 years ago on the recommendation of a physiotherapist friend.

Following with interest.

I bought a Tempur pillow months ago and only used it for one night....it seemed too high up and not squishy enough. Does this get better/do you get used to it? Wondering whether to try again.

wowfudge · 20/09/2019 18:44

I'll report back on the M&S pillow tomorrow. FYI no goodwill returns with M&S. If you take the pillow out of the bag - you have to break a plastic tag to do so - they won't refund you unless it's faulty. This is for 'hygiene' reasons. I tried it out through the bag first. Bit impractical due to that being thick plastic!

PlatinumBrunette · 20/09/2019 19:05

I found memory foam awful for inducing even more hot flushes. Spent a fortune and used the pillow for less than a night.

Dunlopillo latex, however, has been an absolute dream. Still not perfect, but much better than anything else I've tried. It was one of these www.johnlewis.com/browse/home-garden/bedding/pillows/dunlopillo/_/N-5ubiZ1z13z7z

Flurgle · 20/09/2019 20:31

Dunlopillo is ok but it’s not been the holy grail I expected for the money.

I bought those marriott pillows, find although fluffy at the start of the night they collapse nicely so I do not wake up with a sore neck or a headache.

As promised, I'm reporting back. I did wake with a migraine around 5am, but I put that down to having just three hours sleep the night before. I have no neck pain or discomfort.

billy1966 · 21/09/2019 09:23

Result👍

Flurgle · 21/09/2019 09:25

Wowfudge- was it hot? Am willing to risk the money if not!

OP posts:
wowfudge · 21/09/2019 09:27

No, it wasn't hot. I have short hair and our house is pretty cool.

granadagirl · 21/09/2019 09:36

I have this exact problem

I’ve tried a few in the past wasting my money

I’ve just got a tempur pillow £99 (wow, I know) but I got it on 30 day trial on the tempur site.

First night, it felt flat(/low usually sleep 2 feather& down)
I would say with me, it was getting used to sleeping with one pillow again
I’ve had it now 10 nights and it seems better than first night.
Partner bought cheaper one from JL
His is a lot harder

Flurgle · 24/09/2019 18:45

Granadagirl- which Tempur did you get? I’m looking at shaped v cloud.
