Hair loss along the hairline/front of the head. Quite noticeable. I'm 42. WTAF?!

Does anyone else have thinning hair at the very front, just behind the hairline? It's been going that way for a while, but I'm really noticing it now, when the hair is parted it's almost like a bald patch. It's thinning enough that it gets sunburnt!

Does anyone else have this? It's not normal "female pattern baldness" according to Dr Google. It looks awful! Is it irreversible?

Watching with interest. I have similar but it's chemo hair loss that didn't grow back properly. I've just been watching on FB those vids where they spray stuff onto thinning men's hair and lo, a full head of hair.

I've just lost my mum and it's got worse!

ilovespinach · 19/09/2019 19:31

Nothing to add but place marking as I have the same ....

Soola · 19/09/2019 19:33

Do you wear your hair pulled back? That can put stress on the hairline.

I Lose my hair in round patches when I go through prolonged periods of stress(alopecia areata). Always have done. Then about 2 years ago mine started thinning at the front. I cut 13 inches off the length, put in a fringe for a year or so, and stopped wearing it in a pony tail. It definitely thickened up.

PicsInRed · 19/09/2019 19:47

Iron deficiency, stress, sun glasses or spectacles rubbing on scalp?

Windydaysuponus · 19/09/2019 19:50

Tight ponytail?.
Fringe needed ime.

pigeononthegate · 19/09/2019 20:15

No tight ponytail but I do wear it in a messy bun quite a lot...not full Croydon facelift though, just fairly loose!

It really does look horrible Sad

This happened to me when I was going through a very stressful event and stopped taking the pill. My hair was coming out in handfuls and I could see the light bouncing off my scalp. Sad

I had full bloods done at the doctor and there were no thyroid issues, so I concentrated on healthy eating and minimising stress. After about 4/5 months my hormones must have balanced again because the hair loss stopped and baby hair started growing.

So I recommend: getting a blood test, trying to balance your hormones (evening primrose oil, or maca supplements) and trying to be zen. Good luck! It feels so awful doesn't it? I thought I was going to look like a balding man with a ponytail.

Thankyouplease · 19/09/2019 20:27

It happened to me a couple of years ago. Without going into too much detail I had some kind of (non malignant) growth that had attached itself to my ovaries.

ihatethecold · 19/09/2019 20:32

Could you be peri menopausal op?
This is very common in women in the few years before menopause.
I’m 45 and have been peri for 2 years.

One product that really helps is Organic Burst Chlorella tablets taken daily for a few months.

Newgirls · 19/09/2019 22:05

Lack of iron and b12 can be a factor, also peri-menopause. Def get some blood tests!

Gilead · 19/09/2019 22:34

Another one suggesting blood tests, this is common with a drop in estrogen and a rise in testosterone.

Namechangenecessity · 19/09/2019 22:37

Thyroid? I lose lots of hair even though medicated x

Dowser · 19/09/2019 22:41

Mine thickened up when I started taking good quality supplements over a very, very long time
I too had, had a stressful time plus mums hair went thin at an early age

I take Vit d3 with k2
Ionic selenium and nascent iodine
I took DHEA for a short time
I tak concentrace after every meal..it’s magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium from the salt lake in Utah
I’m sure there’s other things but those are the main ones.
I have a fringe but it’s so much thinner than it used to be when younger but I don’t have baldy bits.

Dowser · 19/09/2019 22:46

Haven’t got a photo of the top of my head but maybe this can you give you an idea

I’ve never had really thick hair btw..it’s always been fine..but just plenty of it..now..not so but there’s still enough to ,ale a decent ponytail
I brush it twice a day and put it in a ponytail for bed
As it’s highlighted I have a special brush that has ultra fine bristles

I treat it with kid gloves really
I’m. Nearly 68.. mums was much finer and sparse by that age..she taken lots of hrt ..I’ve never had any of that.

LarkDescending · 19/09/2019 22:58

A friend of mine has severe thinning (effectively a progessively receding hairline) now diagnosed as frontal fibrosing alopecia.

LionsHeart · 19/09/2019 23:05

So much of my hair has fallen out around my hairline that I haven't got enough for a fringe. I'd be doing a Trump-style combover from the back of my head.
I'm taking thyroxine already, so next its B12, Vit D & a multivitamin to cover all the bases. I'm also massaging in Regaine for men & sod the consequences.
I've been asking for help for the last decade to NO avail and I want my hair back.

pigeononthegate · 19/09/2019 23:07

I'd never heard of frontal fibrosing alopecia, I wonder if it could be that Shock

I'm going to make a GP appointment (easier said than done) and ask for some blood tests. I hope it isn't bloody permanent Sad

I’ve had this. Ended up paying to see a trichologist who said it was Telogen Effluvium: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321590.php
My blood tests showed that while my iron levels were technically within the normal range my ferritin levels were right at the bottom of the scale. Can be caused by lots of different things.
