Do I apply for this job?

After having a career break following DC2 I decided to change my career and I began studying the relevant qualification from home long distance. 3 years ago I was lucky enough to secure a part time entry level job in chosen profession. Whilst pay was low, they are very flexible, I work mostly term time only and they are funding my continued studies. I’m still there now, progressing well with studies (2 years away from masters level and being qualified) however there are currently no promotion opportunities and pay remains low (I am in same position). I’m worried about becoming over qualified for my level of work experience so will need to move soonish.

The same job has come up very close to home (I could walk there in 10 mins), it would also be part time and child friendly hours. Pay would be the same. When I first saw it advertised I thought that I must apply but now having doubts.

I miss having a career and am keen to start progressing, ideally in the private (not public) sector. Once all exams passed and I have experience, my pay will virtually double. I’m worried that if I go for this job and get it, it will delay things by a few years. Also will potential future employers be put off my being in the public sector for so long at a lower level job.

The type of work I would do in the new job would not be as complex as I do now so I wouldn’t learn anything new however I would have no commute to do and it would be great for the family. My DH has said that he fully supports whatever I choose 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m being very presumptuous that I would get it but I think I would have a good chance.

Any thoughts on what I should do?

I don’t really understand the issue? But if your current employer is funding your training surely you can’t leave yet?

If I have misunderstood and funding isn’t an issue, just put your family first and move to a job closer to home.

Future employers won’t care what you did before. Surely you just tell them you were training and juggling a family... now you’re ready to move your career forward again?

I don't understand why it would delay things for a few years? Do you mean you will stop your qualifications?

There’s no requirement to stay with them - they fund an exam at a time (& nothing in contract).

I was planning to leave soon to a more senior role elsewhere helping me gain more experience and for higher pay. This would still mean c30/40mins door to door journey each way.

The job closer to home is exactly the same grade as now so there’s no progression. Therefore delaying my progress back up the ladder. I would still study and just self fund.

There is the opportunity of more contacts via the new place? Seeing them same job in a different setting?

Unfortunately not - I’d be the only person in that function and no other offices. I’m going off it I think 🤔
