What age did you take the headrest off your school age child’s car seat?

DTs are telling me the headrests on their car seats are too low and digging into their shoulders. Sure enough, they are!

The headrests won’t go up any further but it feels far too early to take them off - they’re only six and a half! They’re 122 and 123cm and both weigh 23kg, but are very long backed.

These seats are meant to do them until they’re 11, but I’m not sure at what stage it’s ok to take the headrest off. If it’s something we just need to put up with that’s fine, but is there any guidance on it?

Why are posters still talking about backless?! Read the OP she is talking about the headrest, not the back

Because I know of no car seat where the headrest is designed to come off and the back stay on. The headrest is an integral part of the back.

I see many children who are driven around without car seats who clearly should still be in them.

Plus a high back booster with no head rest would be pretty pointless, you may as well just use the booster cushion.

Sorry, hectic day, didn’t mean to go awol.

Yes that’s the seat @sleepingdragon.

I promise the headrest slips out!

To clarify, taking them out of car seats and putting them just on boosters is not an option. I just didn’t know if it was a ‘thing’ to have the seats without the headrest, and it’s appears it’s not. If we need to look at new car seats, they’ll have to wait til the new year.

You could ask around to see if anyone you know have any second hand high back boosters. They are difficult to get rid of as you can't really sell used carseats and charity shops won't usually take them, so someone might be quite glad to get rid of them. As long as they haven't been in an accident they are safe to use.

Sorry to say it, but are you 100% sure you have extended the headrest as far as it goes?
