Hi

Dd age 14 years suffers with anxiety and vomiting have just been prescribed propranolol
She has to take two tabs a day
Is it best she takes first one before bed as i have only just picked them up
Was thinking she could take first tab after school and second one before beds on others days
Says first one can make you feel dizzy
Was wary about her taking tablet one before school encase it makes her feel ill
So relieved to finally get tablets to help after numerous drs appmnts x

Yes I would give her just before bed, I used to take these myself for anxiety, weaned myself off before trying for a baby and I'm a nurse. I'm sure you already know but they lower the heart rate and blood pressure and dizziness is common. It takes a few weeks for the body to adjust so keep an eye on her and ask the gp to lower the dose if she is very sleepy or dizzy on them.

Thankyou

She has been given 10 has to take 2 a day
So 20 mg a day

1st tab after school is probably better than taking in the morning then?
2nd tab before bed

I would see how she goes on the 10mg before bed before you consider 20mg. Stick to one in am and one pm. Tbh 10mg in an adult is a low dose but for a child albeit a teen I don't know. Ask your gp if unsure.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 19/09/2019 14:52

10 is hardly anything, I wouldn't waste them on sleeping hours unless her anxiety keeps her awake. When is she most anxious? If at school then take one in the morning and the other around lunch time. She only needs 4 hours between them.

TheCatInAHat · 19/09/2019 14:56

10mg can be an effective dose for an adult for anxiety so don’t try 20mg unless the dr advises you to. Best to give her the first one at the weekend when you are around to see how she manages. Her being in bed might mask dizziness and feeling her faint.

katewhinesalot · 19/09/2019 14:56

Aren't they the equivalent of a glass of wine or something - if my memory serves me correctly. DD was prescribed it for something different but I remember thinking "oh she's going to school probably merry"

unicornsrule · 19/09/2019 15:00

Cool with give her one tablet tonite before bed
Then 2 tabs from tomorrow
1st after school then 2nd before bed

They are a ‘build up in the system’ drug, like antidepressants so won’t be ‘wasted’ on sleeping hours. I can only speak for the later but get horrible side effects without fail every time I switch/ start something new until the dose builds up and my body adjusts and find splitting morning and night stops the nausea being so strong in one hit that I actually vomit if that makes sense? Personally I’d go for first thing in the morning (ideally with a slice of toast) and at night, again having even some small solid carb like a gingernut, digestive or cracker if she can. It’ll keep her blood pressure and sugars more stable and help with nausea.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 19/09/2019 15:04

I take these for anxiety and take them 'as and when I need them' I'd not bother during sleep if she can sleep ok now.

I'd take one when she wakes and one just after school.

If she's unsure about how they will affect her, why not try her on them at the weekend to start with and see how she gets on

BlueScreen171 · 19/09/2019 15:12

They are a ‘build up in the system’ drug

They aren’t.

Lots of people just take them PRN. They do not need to build up in the system at all.

I was on 10mg but found it wasnt working for me. I was given 40mg and would take them as and when needed. So..if I was going to a lecture or feeling anxious/dizzy from panic, id take one 30mins before. They really do take the edge off and I had no pysiological symptoms from taking them when I needed them. Hope your daughter can overcome her anxiety, I had CBT and intense therapy which helped me to come off propanolol x

TheCatInAHat · 19/09/2019 15:28

They can be used as both a ‘when required’ or regular intervals treatment. They have several indications- anxiety is just one of them.

I’m sure the dr checked- but she’s not asthmatic is she? I’ll reiterate that it’s best for her to take them at the weekend initially to check she doesn’t experience difficult side effects.
I’m a pharmacist (currently not practicing).

unicornsrule · 19/09/2019 15:49

She will be taking them all the time as she has anxiety, migraines and vomiting x

I'd give them before bed.

As a warning when my dd took them, the first week she was like a zombie who needed sleep. She couldn't do anything except sleep. The second week, she started doing a little more and by the third she was fine.

But I thought at the end of the first week that she'd have to stop.

unicornsrule · 19/09/2019 17:33

Thankyou witch end thats helpful
How many mg is she on?!

OP posts:
Witchend · 19/09/2019 17:41

She's come off it again now, but she was on one tablet a day, but I can't remember the strength. I'd imagine it was lowest strength as she was only 10yo at the time.

FeedMeTikka · 19/09/2019 17:48

My daughter takes them, first dose in a morning so that it helps reduce the anxiety symptoms throughout her morning/time at school. Second dose she takes after school at dinner time x

fantasmasgoria1 · 19/09/2019 17:50

Tbh I take all but one of my psychiatric meds an hour and a half to 2 hours before bed

unicornsrule · 20/09/2019 08:58

I used to take these - two tablets a day - one in the morning, one at night.
