How healthy are your dc's secondary school lunches?

I'm surprised how many unhealthy options there are at my dds' secondary school. They sell chocolate bars, fizzy drinks, big slices of cake etc. There are healthier options too but I thought schools were much healthier these days and don't sell all the sugary snacks.

Dd says it's hard to refuse if it's there in front of you and wishes they don't sell all this rubbish.

What are your schools like?

Very similar. I don't worry about it too much as he's conscious of eating rubbish and I just ensure he has a good breakfast and a good evening meal with loads of fresh veg etc. He tends to grab a cheese and pepperoni bagel or chicken baguette with crisps at school, sometimes a pizza.

I've tried the whole giving him a packed lunch but that would go untouched in favour of tempting stuff so I just put in some fruit and a flapjack and he buys one thing

It is tempting for them and I'd prefer something on offer that was at least a nod towards being healthy

There's a fair bit of unhealthy stuff I think but my kids both have the same thing everyday which is a pot of pasta with tomato or meat sauce and cheese so not terrible.

Well I'm surprised! I thought school lunches were much better these days or is that just primary schools?

It just seems to laugh in the face of healthy eating in primary schools, where they seem to be obsessed with healthy eating.

My DD has just started secondary school and is like a kid in a sweet shop -literally, and of course they can also bring in whatever they want for snacks at break and their packed lunches.

Not great. DS is massively sporty and always hungry so pizza, curry, burgers etc go down a treat but there seems to be little in the way of veg and salad. He doesn't like the cakes very much and he's on a £2.50 budget so he doesn't go crazy.

A couple of his friends have pilled on weight since high school.

I think late lunchtimes and fully catered morning breaks are also a factor; some kids basically eat two, fairly unhealthy lunches.

Yes my DD school has pancakes etc at breaktime and then a very late lunch. They do meal deals, which of course include cookies and cake !
