Anyone here had allergy or irritant problems with Eco Eggs?

After trying what feels like every detergent under the sun, and asking for a load of advice here, I was finally feeling ready to try an Eco Egg.

I googled to find out what's actually in those mineral pellets, and was surprised to find that one of the ingredients is sodium bicarbonate, i.e. bicarbonate of soda. But I've tried washing my clothes in bicarbonate of soda a few times before and it's made me itch all over and taken several washes to get rid of it.

I don't quite understand why it would be any different just because it's inside an egg. It keeps being hailed as this miracle product. Is there any reason why using this thing is any better than just washing with an ingredient that's already caused me a load of itching? I feel like I've missed something.

I really really wanted to love my eco egg, but it gave me terrible eczema anywhere my clothes touch me, including places i’ve never had it before, like my bum. My hips and sides were bad as I’m a side sleeper. My face. It was a disaster for me and I ended up binning it. I thoroughly researched it before buying, as I have stupidly sensitive skin, but the reviews looked good.

@Progress2019 What detergent did you end up using in the end, if you've found something that works for you?

I’m currently using Surcare sensitive. I haven’t had any problems so far.

tectonicplates · 26/09/2019 16:50

Oh. I wish I could find something that didn't irritate me. Surcare worked for about two washes but then started causing me problems again. But I've tried every detergent under the sun and Surcare is the least bad, even though it's awful.

The egg was fine for me but brought ds out with more eczema, only clear where his nappy covered basically. We use Surcare too but another thing I read about was soap nuts? And simply pure or grated olive soap. But once the surcare worked I wasn’t risking chopping n changing again. Is your machine a new eco style one? We can’t use the nice short eco washes they don’t seem to rinse everything enough so he gets irritated, but we use a 60c 1:50 wash and that seems to have helped.

tectonicplates · 26/09/2019 17:27

Soap nuts are far worse than Surcare. I've tried endless detergents, all of which were recommended in these boards, and Surcare is the least bad. We did get a new washing machine a few months ago but we rent our flat so we don't get a choice. I've been doing extra rinse cycles but it still doesn't get rid of the smell.

Anyway, I just wanted to know if Eco Eggs were all that.

I’m not sure. I normally do a half hour wash on 30 but that’s probably not long enough really. I hadn’t thought of that.
