How to freeze / use apples?

What's the best way to freeze apples please? We have loads of them from our trees! Also looking for some ideas on what to actually do with them all.

Are they baking or eating apples? We have a Bramley Apple tree which are very sour. This is my favourite recipe which uses about 4-5 large apples - www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2044/dorset-apple-traybake (I also add cinnamon)
They’re also good for crumbles, pies, chutneys etc.

Stew them and then freeze in portions to make into apple pie, crumble etc.

After peeling them, you can season the peels with cinnamon and bake them as apple chips.

You can store them in a cool, dark cupboard for months as long as they're not touching. I keep them in the shed in a veg box from the supermarket with newspaper stuffed inbetween them.

@KeithFitt thanks for that recipe. I’m going to change some things around to make it lower carb. It looks like a nice way to enjoy apples.

Thanks all, they're cooking apples.

Mine are eating apples and they don't keep at all well so I peel them, chop them into segments, blanch them and freeze them. Not sure if it's worth blanching them tbh as they go a bit brown anyway but once I use them for something it doesn't matter.

This. Otherwise stew and freeze in portions.

I have heaps of apples too, I've tried making apple sauce and bottling it (in sterilised jars) but I've no idea of they will keep. Time will tell.
I don't like apple chutney and have limited freezer space so running out of ideas of what I should do with them.

Teddybear45 · 19/09/2019 12:46

Freezing will make them go off faster. Best thing to do is dust them down and pop them in the fridge (at 4 degrees). I do this with apples I pick and they usually last up to 12 months

I make apple jelly- plain and with chillies or mint. And apple crumbles with the topping put on top but not backed, then frozen. I have about 10kg of apples in my kitchen at the moment and am planning an evening of jelly making this evening.

I also have a tree full of bramley apples. I was going to cook them and freeze them. Is there a specific amount of sugar per weight that needs to be added when stewing them?

Damntheman · 19/09/2019 14:15

You can make apple butter and apple cordial if you want, that'll use up quite a few of them! That said, if they're cooking apples you might need more sugar than if you were using eating.
