Any recommendations for a cheapish printer where the cartridges don’t cost a million pounds?

My printer is on its way out and the cheap ones all seem to have cartridges that cost nearly as much as the bloody printer - even for the compatible ones.

Just needs to do standard home and school type printing, nothing fancy. One with a scanner as well would be good.

Any suggestions?

I would highly recommend an HP printer with Instant Ink, much cheaper with a monthly fee from 1.99. I got 3 months free with mine, 600 pages a month I think, and you can share codes for a free extra month's ink. If you want my code PM me, if you use it both you and I get a free month, then you can share your own codes once you've started.

I was also going to say look at HP, purely because of the instant ink. I pay £1.99 a month and get 50 pages for that. There's no limit on whether they are full colour, whole page photos or just typed letters. You never run out of ink, as the new cartridges arrive before the old ones have run out. I definitely save at least as much as I pay for ink, compared to buying cartridges when they run out.

Thanks, I’ll have a look at them. I’d discounted them as I’d thought it would work out quite expensive as we don’t print that much.

Agree totally with the above. At £1.99 a month even if u dont print a lot it's still worth it then buying the cartridges. It monitors your printing and sends you cartridges before you run out.

Another recommendation here for HP printer with instant ink - also signed up at 1.99 a month but have 5 months free first. Printer was 34.99 in Argos and beats my old Epsom one hands down. Last HP printer lasted 15 years and then I gave it away as a basic copier as it couldn’t be linked wirelessly, bought the Epsom which packed up in 14 months.

Nearlyadoctor · 18/09/2019 21:34

If you print 15 pages or less a month I think the ink is free indefinitely but you pay 1.00 for every 10 pages you go over the 15.

Hijacking totally....any particular HP model you would recommend to those who suggested HP? Thanks! Sorry to butt in OP!

We use Epson all in one printer scanner with ink tanks that are refilled by cheap ink bottles (quick and clean). Quality of print is great.

Epson Ecotank

KurriKawari · 18/09/2019 22:23

And I love how easy it is to print wirelessly from my phone/laptop etc

LadyHonoriaDedlock · 18/09/2019 22:32

I came on to recommend the Epson ecotank too - so cheap and you can use generic ink refills

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 18/09/2019 22:43

Eco tank recommendation here too. The printer costs more, but I'm only on my 2nd set of refills in 3 years, with 2 student kids printing regularly.

thecatneuterer · 19/09/2019 00:14

What a timely thread. I was going to look for a new printer tomorrow. Just ordered an Epsom Ecotank.

Aquamarine1029 · 19/09/2019 00:18

Before you buy a printer, look up generic/no name cartridges on Amazon. Some models/brands have them available, some don't. I buy them for my HP printer/scanner/copier and they cost next to nothing and work great.

Nearlyadoctor · 19/09/2019 06:45

@bobkate - I bought the HP Officejet 3835 which is a printer, scanner and copier.

Branleuse · 19/09/2019 06:52

Get a black and white laser printer unless there's a regular need for colour. The cartridge hardly ever needs changin, so even though i just changed it for about £25 itll last me much much longer than an inkjet

Thecrown3 · 19/09/2019 07:07

On Monday I just bought an HP printer that was reduced to £24.99 in Argos. As op’s Have said got 2 months free and have signed up for £1.99 deal for ds’s homework.brilliant idea.

Impatientwino · 19/09/2019 07:09

Another vote for HP and instant ink. I don't notice a couple of pounds a month and 50 sheets a month is plenty for me.

bobkate · 19/09/2019 22:12

nearlyadoctor thank you!

bananasandwicheseveryday · 20/09/2019 18:29

My printer was quite pricey - one of the office jet pro range. I do love it though. I print a lot of colour - photos as well as making resources for work. The quality is very good.y one automatically prints double sided, scans and copies. It also has its own email address so I can send things directly to the printer rather than storing on my computer.

DanFmDorking · 20/09/2019 18:47

Don't buy a cheap printer.
Get a decent printer and but your ink cartridges here.

StormyLovesOdd · 20/09/2019 18:58

I was just about to ask the same question, need a printer for DD homework. Does the HP printer work with an iPhone or do you have to have a laptop?

Thecrown3 · 21/09/2019 06:52

@StormyLovesOdd the HP one I bought at Argos prints from iPhone , tablets, from emails etc..
I hope the link below works? This is the one I just bought and it’s brill.
