best way to stop nuisance landline phonecalls

DM is registered with TPS and details not on public electoral roll, still getting 4-5 nuisance calls a day....all of whom she has lengthy calls with to try and get rid of them (she is too polite to hang up!) She's With BT, they no longer do anonymous call reject. Is there a phone you can buy to filter these calls? Or better still a phone that answers with "this call is being recorded". Any suggestions please before DM gets scammed out of her life savings.

Can't she get a phone with caller id? I would also strongly encourage her to start hanging up on these people. It is not impolite to say, "Take me off your calling list, please" and then hang up. Remind her they are the ride ones trying to scam her out of money.

There are a few but at least one is a scam.
Let me look for a link.

I'm sure rip off Britain covered it but can't find it on iPlayer.

Thanks, I'm just looking into a phone with caller ID. She won't hang up. I had to practically wrestle the phone out of her hands the other day when it was obvious the person on the other end was trying to get money out of her by telling her that the insurance on her TV was running out (she doesn't have separate TV insurance). She always says "I'd never give my details out over the phone"........but I'm sure one day someone will con her.

My DF is the same.
Absolutely won't be rude or abrupt despite them being unsolicited.
We ended up getting rid of landline and he just uses mobiles (which has it's own problem)

I've just been through this with my Mum after she was scammed. She also got a huge amount of cold calls selling her various insurances/call blocking services despite being registered with TPS.

About 3 weeks ago (also after posting on here) I set up Sky Sheild (Sky is our phone provider) - the calls have pretty much stopped.

It works by automatically answering the call before it reaches your telephone - the caller has to say who they are - the system then routes through the name of the caller to you and you choose whether to accept the call. Basically anyone who is not genuine (or using auto-dialling systems) cannot get through.

She now no longer fears the phone ringing.

She needs a call blocker/call guardian phone. It means that any callers whose numbers aren't already agreed by you will have to announce themselves before you pick up the phone - so you can just not pick up if it is unsolicited. Not sure exactly how it works but I rang my elderly Aunt once on my mobile instead of my landline and had to speak to a call guardian recording. Once I'd spoken and my Aunt knew who it was then she picked up.

BT do Call Protect (free for BT customers). It filters out known scammers, but if you do get one, you dial 1572 to block further calls from that number. Or else as PP mentioned get a call guardian phone or a call blocker.

Agree with pp. phone with call guardian. We have had one for about 18 months now. It is brilliant and absolutely amazing how many calls it automatically screens out. You programme all your usual numbers in eg relatives , doctor, dentist etc and they are automatically put through to phone and you can see it's them from the caller id screen. Any unrecognised numbers are out through to an automated call guardian and they have to announce who it is. When they have done that your phone rings with the description " announced call" and you listen to who it is and decide whether to take it or not and press relevant numbers to pick up or dismiss. Cold callers never bother announcing themselves and just hang up and the automated ones seem to do the same. The astonishing thing is you can see all the numbers that have called you and it's unbelievable the number that ring but I never know about. I was initially worried that genuine callers would be put off but that hasn't been the case if people do need to speak to you they will announce themselves. Ours is a Bt phone but suspect others do them too ?
